Castle Castelnaudary (11)

At the heart of this pre-Napoleonic ensemble of buildings lies an impressive and substantial main home with an elegant slim turreted roofline and grand tall, original windows giving the impression of being much bigger than it actually is. The high ceilings of the entrance hall are mirrored on both the ground and the first floors. One wing of the ground floor enjoys an impressive dining room with an open fireplace and original stone detailing and a huge kitchen occupying the full end of the building with two large marble islands and modern appliances. The kitchen is a perfect marriage of modern eclectic and traditional pieces such as the Italian chandeliers that characterise so much of this property. On the other side are an elegant reception room, salon and library. Upstairs the 5 bedrooms are spacious with views over either the Black mountains to one side or the mature Mediterranean garden to the other. The master bedroom is vast, spanning the width of the house with two separate bathrooms and a large dressing room adjoining it. All the rooms are well proportioned and eye-catching. The house has 4 separate working original fireplaces but there is also central heating throughout provided by an efficient air-pump system but utilising handsome original cast-iron radiators in keeping with the property. The floors are either the original tiles or beautiful original herringbone parquet. In front of the main house, flanking it either side are two solid stone garrison-like buildings which in previous times have been used as workman's cottages when this place was a farm or vineyard. One currently is used to host magical dinner parties, the other needs developing. On the grounds are the following properties - Two large, attractive 3 bedroom stone houses which could serve as a friends and family place or gites. Possible gite business (subject to necessary permissions) There is also an artist’s studio, further storage units, a large greenhouse and a tiny chapel! The grounds have century old trees, including Lebanese cyprus trees (popular with the Knights Templar), a manicured lawn with a curve that hints at the old roman wall on which it is terraced and a koi carp pond. The property also has a swimming pool, some wild land and the whole 3.6 hectares of land are surrounded by trees making it completely invisible to even the odd car passing in the distance on what is a quiet, country road to the local village. If you are passionate about unique properties, wanting a family home that is big enough for friends and to entertain, or wanting a property that could bring in an income - this place is a must-see. Castle Mirepoix (09)

A fifteenth-century chateau and Benedictine abbey with splendid grounds in one of France’s most beautiful villages, in the country’s Ariège department. You reach the property via a narrow lane that runs along the chateau. The edifice forms a U shape, adjoined to an abbey. It enjoys a commanding view over the River Hers valley. The property is a haven of peace in the heart of a region with an eventful past: Occitania. The chateau stands like a fortress. It is the fruit of a long monastic story: a combination of medieval history and Benedictine architecture. The existence of this Benedictine abbey was first mentioned in a deed that dates back to 923. Charlemagne, returning from a campaign against the Saracens, chose the spot in 778 to build a monastery and a church. A natural dam that held back Puivert lake nearby burst on 18 June 1279, destroying all the villages in the valley. The monastery was rebuilt between 1280 and 1316 to look like France’s royal fortresses with arrow slits. Then its monks abandoned the edifice during the Hundred Years’ War. Later, in 1502, a phase of reconstruction began, resulting in the buildings that we can see here today. This was an initiative from Philippe de Lévis, the Bishop of Mirepoix, who gave the fortified priory a majestic, serious look. He created apartments in the rectangular tower that the chateau still features today. From this period onwards, especially during the edifice’s second phase of restoration in the eighteenth century, the chateau never stopped being embellished with rich decorative features that expressed the abbey’s powerful influence. The edifice is made up of three sections crowned with gabled and hipped roofs that are covered in monk-and-nun tiling and edged with triple-row génoise cornices. The first section is long and thick. It has three floors and an end tower that is taller than the rest of it. Many evenly placed arched or right-angled windows punctuate its walls. The two other sections adjoin the church. They form a cloister around a garden courtyard. The west section has three floors and the east section has two floors. The latter was recently converted into a gîte. In front of the edifice’s large south-facing facade, a terraced garden leads down to parkland that includes an age-old magnolia in its range of trees.

Castle Carcassonne (11)

13th century castle, between Toulouse and Perpignan. COMPLETELY RESTORED! Location: Located in the south of France in the heart of the green Aude, 15 minutes from the medieval bastide of Mirepoix, 45 minutes from the city of Carcassonne and Toulouse, we are in the French countryside, where calm and serenity emanate from the place. Motorway access is 15 minutes away, TGV station and airports are 45 minutes away. History: The Seigneurie de Plaigne was built in the 13th century by the Cathar lord Guillaume de Plaigne. His last descendant, Anne de Plaigne, who married the Count of Pibrac in 1642, sold the castle to François Paul de Béon-Masse-Cazeaux, Grand Prior of the Order of Malta in Toulouse, who refounded it in 1688 as a commandery of the Order of Saint John. It was the largest and most recent commandery in Languedoc. It remained part of the Order of Malta's property until the Revolution. The castle : the elegance of this place is surprising. The park with its hundred year old trees gives off a softness and freshness. The castle has retained the spirit of the fortress, as evidenced by the great Hall of the Knights. However, it has been tastefully restored by two generations of owners. The 12 double rooms in the castle and the 4 double rooms in the independent cottage offer a capacity of 32 people in absolute comfort with a swimming pool. What we think: We see many exceptional properties. This castle is a timeless place where one feels a great sense of well-being whilst remaining connected to a regional metropolis.
