Castle Bar-le-Duc (55)

An 18th-century chateau with a secondary house, indoor and outdoor pools, and eight hectares of grounds with a stream, just over an hour from Paris by high-speed rail. The property is hidden at the end of a small, calm lane in a village with under 250 inhabitants nestled in a beautiful valley through which a stream gently flows. A large gate opens beneath a wrought-iron arch of spearheads that stand out against the sky. The chateau towers at the end a long driveway alongside which annexes lie. The drive leads up to the edifice’s front courtyard. Splendid grounds extend all around the chateau. Woods edge them. A stream snakes through the grounds and a canal with a washing place runs through them too. Bridges of stone, wrought iron and timber cross the stream. Stone benches dot the grounds. There is an outdoor tennis court here too. And an island features an elegant wrought-iron pavilion crowned with a zinc roof.

Castle Vitry-le-François (51)

An 18th-century chateau listed as a historical monument where the writer Diderot stayed and that the fashion designer Lagerfeld owned, nestled in 13 hectares of grounds with outhouses. A long tree-lined driveway set back from a secondary road leads to a bridge that crosses the chateau’s moat. At the end of this bridge there is the property’s entrance gate. The chateau and its grand court lie on a rectangular earthen terrace. To the right of them, there is a swimming pool and large outhouses forming a U shape. The grounds extend behind the chateau, well beyond the moat. This vast rear section includes a stream and a patchwork of woodland and meadows that stretches to the River Marne and a private river beach. The chateau was built between 1720 and 1740 by Jean-Robert Volland, France’s chief salt tax officer. In 1755, his daughter Sophie was 39 years old when she met the writer and philosopher Denis Diderot, who was aged 42 at the time. Diderot stayed at the chateau on two occasions: in 1759 and 1770. His letters to Sophie Volland, written over a period of more than 14 years, form the most famous romantic correspondence of the 18th century. The property was sold for the first time in 1773. It then changed owners three times. In 2001, the renowned fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld bought the chateau. He then sold it in 2011. The chateau is currently rented out for short stays.

Castle Tonnerre (89)

A 18th-century chateau, 9 hectares of walled grounds and vineyards to be replanted near Chablis in Burgundy. Entirely enclosed by a well-maintained surrounding wall, the property consists of a chateau built in 1746, which was remodelled in 1890, a 19th century house, a farm and its outbuildings. The facades are made of exposed or rendered stone, the roofs have two or four slopes of flat tiles and the windows are straight or have a low arch. The eastern entrance to the property, which is opposite the church, leads to the chateau and the adjacent farm via a paved driveway. To the west there is a second more imposing entrance through a wrought iron gate that opens onto a long avenue of lime trees, at the end of which lie the gardens. Close to the rear facade, they separate the building from the grounds, which are hillside meadows. Perfectly suited to viticulture, these south-east-facing hillsides have been recognised by professional wine bodies, who have granted them planting rights for 4.5 hectares under the 'Tonnerre' appellation for the Chardonnay grape variety and the 'Bourgogne Rouge' appellation for the Pinot Noir grape variety. In the summer, horses are kept in the meadows, which are have a shelter and fencing. In the winter, spacious boxes in the farm's stable protect the horses from the cold.

Castle Vitteaux (21)

A 15th-century medieval chateau and its farm complex to be restored, nestled in the Auxois province of Burgundy. The chateau was built in 1461 at one end of a village nestled in a small valley of a tributary of the River Brenne. The edifice was designed in line with the principles of medieval architecture. It forms a quadrangle, fortified on its east side by two round towers and on its west side by two square towers. The main building and farm complex used to form a closed courtyard, which is today open on its south side. The main dwelling is framed between imposing round defensive towers that have two floors. The highest roof, which was probably once a cone, has been turned into a gabled roof with two gable walls added. There is an arched carriage entrance in the middle of the facade. It is framed between two pilasters. Above it are the two slots of a drawbridge that used to cross a moat, which is now earth-filled. There are also two pavilions at each end of the edifice. The round towers are punctuated with arrow slits on the ground floor and first floor and with rectangular windows with ogee-arch lintels. On the west side, the bases of the two square towers that defend the farm complex follow the slope of the land and have stringcourses marking the top of the slope. They also have arrow slits, like the other towers. Barns close the north and west sides of the complex. Lastly, there are vast cellars. They house a remarkable well with sculpted faces. This well still contains water. It was a vital requirement during sieges.

At the top of a hill with an admirable view several dozen kilometers due south, in a loop of the Saône, this property presents, on a 12th century fortified enclosure, remarkable and very diverse architectural elements of high quality ranging from a dungeon XIIIth century of 33 meters having sheltered relics of crusades to a sumptuous hunting lodge around 1870 looking like goldsmith jewels, all in an admirable state of authenticity and conservation. The 13th century dungeon of cylindrical shape, offering a view up to Vesoul 20km away, remarkably preserved, in large limestone equipment. Well, cross-vaulted room. Stepped doors. Latrines, cushions. Stone staircase in the thickness of masonry 3 meters wide. Formerly covered with a conical roof 30 meters high on an exterior wooden walkway that burned down in 1792, it is now topped with a roof terrace with a walkway, battlements, a polycarbonate dome. Well of 29 meters! Vaulted wine cellar. Heat pump heating. The sumptuous hunting lodge built around 1870, looking like a goldsmithed jewel like a reliquary hunting from the Middle Ages, nestled at the bottom of the park, and standing on the Saône on the 12th century rampart with a splendid South-West view, it sports a particularly valuable neo-medieval building, limestone stereotomy, mullioned window, polylobes, stepped windows decorated with stained glass in superb condition, overhanging roof in polychrome glazed tiles to a spectacular effect. Interior decor painted and emblazoned by Joseph Garret, large stone fireplace, ceiling with beams and painted joists. This pavilion was completely restored in 2000-2001. Facing this pavilion, a delicious orchard with espaliered trees. The model farm built around 1820 offers superb Italian architecture, inspired by the farms of Piedmont, with a square plan around a large interior courtyard. In a remarkable state of preservation, it has very large spaces, large arcaded garages, large covered awnings, a forge, a bakery, a press, a dryer, two beautiful accommodations, a workshop. A threshing floor. Very nice stone floors. Very beautiful neoclassical frames with original trellis. The kennel built around 1850 with elegant symmetrical architecture, a central body flanked by two low wings, three single-storey French doors facing South-East, transformed into accommodation around 1980, a kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom. The 15th century winery has a superb volume under the framework. A tower adjoining the pepperbox roof. Near this winery, the beautiful access from the hill, to the elegant 18th century wrought iron gate between two pillars.
