Castle Fareins (01)
Majestic 17th-century pleasure residence on the banks of the Saône, just 30 minutes from Lyon, 45 minutes from St Exupéry airport and 30 minutes from Macon TGV station. This château is listed as one of the region's finest jewels. Built on the site of a former 12th-century stronghold house, this prestigious residence was rebuilt between 1610 and 1616. This Italian-style château evokes the tranquillity of pleasure residences and the atmosphere of Italian villas, and has retained its feudal structure with moat, drawbridge and corner towers. Built of gilded Beaujolais stone, it comprises a central three-storey main building, which once housed a consistory on the first floor and a Protestant temple on the upper floor. This central body, topped by a high roof, is flanked by two two-storey wings, forming the owners' living quarters. It is flanked on the north side by two projecting square towers topped with imperial domes. On the south side, it opens onto a double flight of stairs leading to a vast formal garden, and beyond to a wilder English-style park. This neglected historic property was renovated in 2000 by its current owners, who have brought it back to life. The building is listed as a Historic Monument, as is the parkland, thus protecting the immediate environment of this building and its 39.6 hectares. The interior boasts a number of historic original features, including a modern empty staircase, which opens onto a central void via arcades, and magnificent reception rooms that cross between the gardens on the south side and the courtyard on the north side. Some of the flats have been restored, including one in the Louis XV style. The former Temple on the second level, with a space of 250 m², remains to be restored. The original decor of the residence is sumptuous, with murals dating from 1632 by the Italian artist Pietro Ricchi, a Tuscan painter. The semi-buried basement housed the kitchens. The boiler room is located on this level. The estate includes numerous outbuildings: the caretaker's cottage at the entrance, which is only partly occupied, a former farmhouse that could accommodate families and guests, with its outbuildings and swimming pool, and the parklands with their orchard, vegetable garden, topiary and elegant plane tree-lined driveway. House Bourg-en-Bresse (01)
A 105 m² apartment in a listed medieval château set in more than 2 hectares of grounds between Lyon and Geneva in the Ain department. Overlooking the village and the river, at the top of an estate terraced by thick stone buttresses, the château is built at the southern tip of the Revermont mountain range. Beyond the gate at the entrance to the grounds, there is a vast parking area opposite, while there is a tree-lined driveway on the right. This leads to former outbuildings arranged around a courtyard: a farmhouse, a barn and a former convent building converted into accommodation. Beyond their rendered facades covered in canal tiles, the château can be glimpsed from the south, with its grounds which are lined with large lawns and shady footpaths. Rebuilt in the 16th century, and with its gravelled area in front, the east-facing building stands out due to its size. Its impressive rendered facades are topped with a hipped flat tile roof and pierced by numerous high windows, giving an indication of how bright the interior must be. At the north end, the castle is flanked by a heavy square tower. At the end of the 15th century, it housed the tomb of Philibert Le Beau, Duke of Savoy, and the chapel of his wife, Marguerite of Austria, daughter of Emperor Maximilian I, whose name is on the main building staircase. The tower, built of exposed cut stone, is influenced by Renaissance architecture: the position of its cross-mullioned bays, topped with triangular or round-arched pediments, follows the stone staircase it houses. The apartment, which is on the second floor, begins with a hallway that leads to almost all of the rooms. The 105 m² property has a bright living area with an open-plan fitted kitchen, three bedrooms with built-in wardrobes and views of the grounds and river, a bathroom and a separate toilet. The site, château and outbuildings have all been listed as historic monuments since 2004.

Castle Bourg-en-Bresse (01)
A 117 m² flat with panoramic views in a listed 15th century castle with over 2 ha of grounds in the Ain region, between Lyon and Geneva. The castle, standing on a plateau with thick stone buttresses at the southern tip of the Revermont mountain range, overlooks and keeps guard over the village and the river. After passing through the gate that marks the entrance to the grounds, a vast parking area stretches out in front, and to the right, a tree-lined driveway ascends to the old outbuildings. These are arranged around a courtyard, comprising a farmhouse, a barn and a former convent building that has been converted into lodgings. The architecture, at once simple and angular, testifies to the authenticity of the site. As you look beyond their rendered facades topped by monk-and-nun tiles, the castle can be made out to the south, with its grounds featuring large lawns and shady footpaths. Rebuilt in the 16th century, the east-facing structure is preceded by a gravel area and stands out for its striking four-storey height. The impressive rendered facades are topped by a hip roof with flat tiles. Numerous tall windows let the light stream into the interior. At the north end, it is flanked by a solid square tower. At the end of the 15th century, this tower housed the tomb of Philibert Le Beau, Duke of Savoy, and the chapel of his wife Marguerite of Austria, daughter of Emperor Maximilian I, after whom the staircase in the main building is named. The tower, built of exposed dressed stone, reflects the architectural style of the Renaissance: the cross-mullioned windows, topped with triangular or round-arched pediments, follow the course of the stone staircase. The second floor flat comprises three bedrooms, a spacious living room with an open-plan kitchen, a bathroom and a separate lavatory. The site, mansion and outbuildings have all been listed as historic monuments since 2004.
