On the border of the Manche and Calvados departments; an 18th century castle and its outbuildings surrounded by almost 20 hectares of land.
The castle is located in the immediate vicinity of a village of 1,200 inhabitants, with all the shops and local services, on the edge of a national forest of 1,500 ha. The nearest train station is Vire, situated just 15 km from the property and giving a journey time of 3 hours to Paris. Access to the A84 is 18 km away.
At the entrance to the village, the castle stands in the middle of a formal French park. From the road, the access driveway, lined with beech trees, splits into two symmetrical alleys, decorated with ball-shaped box, meeting at the foot of the castle. On one side, a pond embellishes the park. There are five outbuildings on the other side.
The castleThis is a perfect example of 18th century architectural classicism. Built in 1783, it has three levels under a four-sided slate roof with triangular pediment dormers. It is built of coursed rubble masonry and the window surrounds are granite stone. They are symmetrically arranged, high and wide, with small-paned windows. In the centre of the main facade, a central slightly protruding dressed stone avant-corps is topped by a triangular pediment. In the centre of the rear façade, a tower has been erected which houses the staircase. On one side, a discreet and well incorporated extension was added in the 19th century.
Ground floor
A wide stone staircase, bordering the central slightly protruding avant-corps, precedes the high French window. The full-width hall is very bright. A winding staircase with two straight flights faces the entrance door. It is housed in the tower on the rear façade. The central landing is lit by very large windows. The wide oak steps are flanked by a very elaborate black wrought iron banister. The stringer is made of stone. The high panelling plays an essential role in the decorative art of this period, with mouldings incorporating mirrors and pictures. The floor is tiled, with a black and white checkerboard pattern. On one side, the double door opens onto two connecting lounges, with walls decorated with wood panelling, sometimes painted. Just like the beams that are left exposed or elegantly encased. The first lounge boasts a white marble fireplace. In the second lounge, an imposing fireplace is made of granite. The floor is paved with grey tiles with an asymmetrical layout. On the other side, the double door opens into the dining room, the flooring is identical to the entrance. A corridor leads to the kitchen and the laundry room. These two rooms were fitted out in an extension to the main building, which was added in the 19th century. In contrast, the kitchen offers very modern, uncluttered and functional features. A long central island faces a large granite fireplace. The floor is paved with large square tiles in a dark slate colour.
First floor
A wide landing leads on either side to a corridor with black and white chequered tiles. The walls are covered with high panelling. It serves six bedrooms with bathrooms. They are generously lit by the large windows.
Second floor
A landing followed by a corridor leads to two bedrooms under slightly sloping ceilings, both with bathroom and toilet, and five bedrooms with a sink. The five outbuildingsThe five outbuildings
The first building has been converted into a large garage with an attic accessed via a stairway in the front. A small building contains two horse stables. A third farm building houses seven horse stables with a front staircase to the attic. An old bakery has been converted into a guest house with a living room and kitchenette, bathroom, toilet and mezzanine on the first floor. A caretaker's dwelling comprises a kitchen, …
