Set on a high hill with breathtaking visibility for literally miles around, stands this magnificent stone tower that has been converted to a spacious family home in recent generations. This is a chateau for anyone who dreamed of a living in a castle when they were a child. It is an impressive and imposing building, and never fails to create a strong impression on visitors. The property is accessed from a quiet country road and has a long private driveway framed by mature trees. We can see it behind the woods as we approach, but struggle to keep our eyes on the road. We drive up the long private driveway and park in the large area set aside for cars. The first instinct is to look up and now the tower is even more impressive, a long smooth expanse of stone, built to last, with a high slate roof at the top. Pass through the wide stone arch of the front door and you find yourself in a comfortable and attractive home of 360 m², with a further 100 m² approximately to develop. The front hall gives you an idea of what to expect; a thick wooden door, lovely exposed stone walls and well-maintained beams, light pouring in from windows high up the staircase. Opposite the front door, a large bespoke kitchen with hand crafted fitted cupboards and an impressive Aga opens on to the formal garden at the back of the house. This is a neat and practical kitchen, built by a local craftsman to order. The focal point of this room is the magnificent black Aga, but all the fittings are good quality and blend seamlessly into the kitchen’s design. The kitchen opens onto a spacious dining room with exposed stone walls, an ancient stone column and arched windows. This is a room for flickering candles and long convivial dinners, an ideal room for long winter evenings. On the ground floor there is also a bedroom with attached bathroom and a laundry room. The wide stone staircase is filled with light that pours in from arched windows in the medieval style. Arriving on the first floor, we find a large sunny library/drawing room with a wet bar and panoramic views through huge picture windows. We note the guest WC before being drawn through a stone archway into a truly fabulous room that seems to be the embodiment of a medieval hall. The first impression is of light and space – this room measures 62 m² and has double height ceilings with huge beautiful beams. Exposed stone walls flank a large open fireplace and through the 4 enormous windows you can see for miles around. This is such an amazing room, and the true heart of this property. On the next floor up we find the bedrooms, all of which have amazing views, as they are so high up. A beautifully renovated shower room serves two bedrooms, and there is a third bedroom with a small shower room. A fourth bedroom has a large en suite bath/shower room which is also newly renovated. A large linen closet on the landing was once a bathroom and still has a sink so could easily be converted back. A door on the landing opposite the stairs opens onto a further staircase that leads up to the 3rd floor, which consists of 5 large rooms with windows which can be renovated if a future owner is interested. And on this landing, a ladder leads up to the 4th floor under the eaves, where there are also windows on all sides. The property has a large outbuilding, which serves on the ground floor to house the oil-fired boiler and the pool pump. There is plenty of room for at least two cars as well as the tractor, the wood stack and assorted gardening tools. Above the large garage we find a completely renovated guest apartment comprising a large hall, living room with open kitchen and two bedrooms, each with an attached bathroom. This space is light and airy and has been beautifully renovated. It is in such good condition, it looks like it has never been used! This would be ideal for visiting guests or to rent out for summer visitors to the region. Past the garage, a shady walkway leads to the fenced swimming pool and a covered BBQ area where you can relax while the kids play in the pool. The grounds also include a formal garden with a pretty fountain and a wooded area, and of course the long sweeping driveway and lawns. Who will this house appeal to? This house is not for those looking for a cozy country cottage – it is a big statement house, a house to spread out in, a house where huge antique mirrors and classic chateau furniture pieces could blend seamlessly with large modern paintings or medieval tapestries. It would work well as a holiday home because you can lock it up and it is completely safe; no-one could ever break in! What would I do if I owned this house? I would consider finishing the 4th floor rooms to put in a big home cinema and a guest suite. And I am sure I would want to put in a proper staircase to the 5th floor and install telescopes on each side for stargazing on clear nights.
