Perched 1300m above the borders of the Haute Alpes and Italy, 50km from Briançon et 80km from Gap the chateau-fortress stands on a rocky outcrop.
The chateau is listed as a historic monument and was first mentioned in 1260. During the 16th century it was attacked during the Wars of Religion and held out against a Savoyard invasion in 1692. The chateau was remodelled by Vauban in the early 18th century and reinforced again in the 19th century.
