Castle Chateauroux (36)

Situated between Issoudun and Châteauroux, this former fortified castle dating from the 9th and 10th centuries was saved in extremis from an advanced state of disrepair by its current owner. A witness to French history, of which only around 400 sqm of the original building remains today, the castle comprises part of the main building and its staircase tower. It was remodeled in the 15th and 19th centuries. The current owner has re-roofed and consolidated the castle. As a result, the castle has regained much of its former splendor. The courtyard is occupied by a former farmhouse that has been converted and renovated into a 100 sqm dwelling house and a 60 sqm apartment. The park features a pond, orchard and vegetable garden. It is surrounded on one side by a river, and on the other by a diversion from it. Although the main structure is in good condition, restoration work is still required, particularly inside the castle. However, with its unique architecture, magnificent setting and privileged location, the castle presents a rare and unique opportunity for any buyer wishing to own a historic property and restore it with care. The potential of this château is exceptional and its charm unparalleled. Information on the risks to which this property is exposed is available at: www.georisques.gouv.fr

Castle Chateauroux (36)

A 19th-century chateau with outhouses, a chapel and a lake, nestled in 30 hectares of grounds in the south of France’s Touraine province. The seigneurial home that was built here on the ruins of a medieval mansion, of which no vestiges remain, was endlessly redesigned until it collapsed in 1860. In 1890, the decision was made to rebuild the edifice on the site. A renowned architect, Louis-Alfred Trolliet, a specialist in the reconstruction of chateaux, was entrusted with this task. He was responsible for the edifice you can see here today. Trolliet was nicknamed ‘the Viollet-le-Duc of the Berry province’ in a nod to the famous 19th-century French architect Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc who restored many medieval monuments. Trolliet won his spurs as a leading figure of the Troubadour style in French architecture with his restoration of the Château de Romefort in the town of Ciron. To rebuild the present property, he did not adopt the Troubadour style but rather the style of the Loire Valley chateaux that was also in vogue at the time. Trolliet opted for a long rectangular dwelling crowned with tall hipped roofs of slate tiles recalling the Château de Chenonceau and the Château d’Azay-le-Rideau. The grand edifice comes into view once you have gone through the entrance gate and made your way up the long central drive punctuated symmetrically with topiary box shrubs neatly clipped into cones. The château faces east and west. Its main section has a ground floor, a first floor and a second floor in the roof space. The adjoining square tower has a third floor in its roof space. The symmetrical elevations are rendered and punctuated with large small-paned windows fitted with wooden louvred shutters that are painted sky blue. Gabled dormers punctuate the roof of the main section and that of the square tower. Beyond the château, the drive crosses dense woodland on this estate, which covers around 30 hectares and includes a 1.2-hectare lake. Trolliet also decided to build two large lodges as foreparts of the château exactly opposite it. These two buildings are rectangular. They have a ground floor and a first floor. A third lodge stands at a right angle to one of them. This third structure has an eclectic style and recalls a train station. On the south side, a circular dovecote with a cone roof of terracotta tiles adorns the grounds. On the east side, there is a heated swimming pool. Behind the outhouses, a secondary entrance leads to a gravelled car park. Lastly, on the north-west side, there is a private lake. In the middle of this lake there is a small tree-dotted island.

Castle Chateauroux (36)

Ref.3866 : Listed french castle for sale in the centre of France. This important village castle in the Indre department was built in the 15th century on the foundations of a late 12th century fortress, and was mainly redesigned in the late 19th century with neo-gothic decoration. The countryside is beautiful, authentic and peaceful, and you can live off the resources of the village and the small medium-sized town 8km away. The castle has retained the appearance of a fortress, even though two sides of the quadrilateral have been levelled, thus opening up the castle to the light and making it lose its military function. However, it is still as imposing as ever, towering towards the sky and surrounded by walls, in the middle of its park. The construction on a terrace, its high towers, the impressive volume of the rooms and its nine centuries of history make it a real castle. The raised ground floor opens onto the terrace, which offers a beautiful view of the park that surrounds the castle. It comprises two hallways, a dining room, a lounge, a kitchen, a library, a toilet, a bathroom and a laundry room. On this level, there are 300sqm. On the first floor, a vast reception level comprising three lounges in a row totalling 200sqm under 4.80 meters of joists. Chapel and master flat comprising a bedroom, a study, a bathroom, wc and dressing room. On the second floor: three other prestigious flats each consisting of a bedroom, a sitting room or study, bathroom and wc. Various other rooms, hidden passages through walls up to 2 metres wide. Above, under the attic, a 240sqm leisure room, bathroom and a staff flat with 3 bedrooms, living room, kitchen and bathroom. The whole of the property totals 1380sqm. It is worth noting the remarkable architectural quality, the quality of the equipment and the careful restoration: parquet or marble floors, monumental armorial fireplaces, polychromy of the chapel, friezes, etc. All this will leave a strong impression. The outbuildings: Only half of the entrance châtelet remains, and so the drawbridge has disappeared as well. However, the 15th century flamboyant gothic dwelling is still there and constitutes a comfortable, but unfinished, 6-room annex house. Heating by the castle's boiler. In the extension of this long building, there is an office, a tavern, a stable and a tack room. And at the end, another tower, fitted out, forming the corner of the quadrilateral. On the first floor, probably a former garrison dormitory, with monumental fireplaces. The fluids are distributed here. And here and there you can still find loopholes, a latrine, a stunner, a fire hydrant, because the traces of history are very present in these buildings which have been little transformed over the centuries. In the east tower, 3 levels of a room, a gunloft, a spiral staircase. On the opposite side, an interesting 15th century gallery, with columns with foliated capitals, partially embedded in the masonry. This building must have been used for agricultural or service purposes, but remains quite rare in its current state. Enclosed park of 4.92 hectares, planted with large ornamental trees, probably reconstructed and laid out with paths towards the end of the 19th century. Vegetable garden with part of an orchard (cherry, apple, walnut and pear trees) The park is enclosed by walls, which provide privacy in the park from the village. The result is a very good outdoor atmosphere. We invite you to visit our website Cabinet Le Nail ( www.cabinetlenail.com/en/ ) to browse our latest listings or find out more about this property.
