A listed, late 15th century castle, with 14 ha, in parklands with a little stream, near to Roanne.
This castle, 10 km from Roanne, near to the Lyon-Clermont motorway and Roanne airport, is surrounded by fields and grasslands, whilst being near to a commune, with 2,000 inhabitants, and its schools, amenities and all local shops. A property having belonged to families close to royal power, along the road between the Loire Valley and Lyon, these premises have welcomed a number of monarchs and illustrious guests.
A private driveway bordered by quickset hedges connects the main road to the property. The tall round keep, crowned with machicolation and topped with a candlesnuffer slate roof, dominates the quadrilateral castle, heralding the prestige of the premises. The 14 hectares of meadows and parklands, with their tall trees and stream, constitute a verdant forest setting. Laid out around a quadrangle, the castle includes the large tower on the south side and a very old square keep on the north-east side; two, smaller round towers, without battlement, adorn the corners on the west side. A stationary bridge crosses the perimeter moat, the bottom of which is home to a stream. Once through the gates, the castle is set out around a rectangular courtyard, with three buildings, to which can be added the ground floor gallery and the medieval keep. The parklands, watered by the stream flowing along the bottom of the moat, are planted with some outstanding trees. A large, modern, comfortable house, resembling a 1970’s villa and spanning approx. 250 m² of living space, stands discreetly at the end of the parklands. A caretaker’s cottage is on the right-hand side of the entrance.
The castleThis quadrangular castle includes the large tower on the south side and a very old, square keep on the north-east side; two, smaller round towers, without battlement, adorn the corners on the west side. A stationary bridge makes it possible to cross the perimeter moat, the bottom of which is home to a little stream. Once through the gates, the castle is set out around an interior courtyard, where the walls are still steeped in the Middle-Ages, despite the presence of an elegant, Italian-style gallery and wide mullioned windows.
The castle comprises three buildings, to which can be added the ground floor gallery and the medieval keep.
Ground floor
Facing the entrance gates, from the other side of the courtyard, a porch provides access to a large, vaulted reception area, complete with its cloakroom. It leads to a first vast bedroom, with a monumental fireplace, large windows, floor tiles and a vaulted ceiling. At the end, a door opens into another bedroom which takes up the ground floor of the keep. From there, a door provides access to the inside of the courtyard gallery which features a little stairway leading upstairs. A large reception room spans the entire ground floor of the northern section and stands out courtesy of its decor. It includes a wide spiral stairway going upstairs. It is illuminated by tall, stained-glass windows and heated by two very large, monumental fireplaces. The French ceiling and the upper part of the walls are entirely covered with painted decor, bringing the memory of the former owners to mind through their coats-of-arms.
Low-ceilinged rooms communicating with this room are reserved for domestic staff: a large, modern, fitted kitchen, followed by a bedroom and a vast room with three beds. From there, access to the cellars (boiler room, water stopcocks and electric fuse panels).
First floor
The first floor of the north wing is taken up by two vast bedrooms, with fireplaces, French ceilings and bathrooms. The west wing comprises a lounge in use as a library, followed by a bedroom with cupboard beds, a fireplace and a bathroom, another bedroom with a 4-poster bed and a bathroom, …
