A 17th century chateau and its parklands, with a river running through, in the Champagne region, 1½ hours from Paris via the A4 motorway.
2½ hours from Brussels and 2 hours from Luxembourg.
A TGV train station, 9 km away, provides links to the French capital taking less than 45 minutes.
This property is in the inner urban area of Reims. Capital of the champagne-producing region, it is home to the large historic Champagne houses. The kings of France were crowned in its cathedral. The “Fêtes Johanniques” (Joan-of-Arc Festivals) are held at the beginning of June to celebrate the coronation of Charles VII, escorted to Reims by Joan-of-Arc. The historic centre of the town takes on a medieval appearance for a weekend.
This property is in a market town, with some 2,000 inhabitants and all amenities. Although far from being isolated, its neighbourhood is discreet, kept at a distance by the vast, surrounding parklands, enclosed by protective, high stone walls on the street side.
Two pavilions and their outbuildings flank the entrance gates which open into the main courtyard, preceding the chateau’s main facade. The parklands are pleasantly dotted with beautiful trees, benches, vases, a flight of steps and a statue of chubby-cheeked children, teasing one another. A stone bridge spans the river.
The chateauBuilt around 1633, this limestone construction is crowned with steep hip roofs. The main building is flanked by two protruding pavilions. The central bay is topped with a triangular pediment, the sculpted scroll of which represents the coat-of-arms of the illustrious Colbert family: a blue pale in the form of an undulating snake on a yellow background.
The roof dormers are also wrought and the facade features symmetrical mullioned windows. A stone string course enhances the various levels and regularly spaced floral decoration adorns the windows on the first floor.
The entrance door and its door knocker are topped with a glazed, small-paned fanlight.
The lateral layout is more unusual, with a little turret, its slightly sprocketed, 5-sided roof soaring skyward.
Ground floor
The central entrance hall is paved with uneven stone. A stairway, winding in a single flight with its wrought iron railings, goes up to the first floor. This hall opens into a vast dining room, decorated with an impressive fireplace. The outstanding matt, stone-paved floor features glazed inlaid decoration and the walls are lined with panelling and verdure tapestries, depicting landscapes enhanced with birds. A concealed corridor, leading to the kitchen, is preceded by a hall area, housing the back stairway. The plain, but functional kitchen provides access to a boiler room. Opposite the dining room, the main lounge is also decorated with a stone fireplace, adorned with the Colbert family coat-of-arms. It is further enhanced with sculpted acanthus leaf motifs. The chimney breast bears a tapestry. Two French windows on either side open on to the parklands. The flooring is made of oak wood and the walls are lined with panelling under a French ceiling. An oak wood door, with an upper open section featuring fine balusters, reminiscent of the main entrance door, provides access to a fully panelled, ladies’ sitting room, featuring a French ceiling and terracotta floor tiles laid in a chessboard pattern. A side door set in the pavilion opens in the direction of the chateau facade.
First floor
The stairway goes up to a vast gallery which runs the length of the main facade. Facing south and very bright, it leads to four bedrooms, a study, two bathrooms, two shower rooms and three toilets. The flooring is in an excellent state of repair throughout. All the windows, similar to those on the ground floor, have oak wood, indoor shutters which fit perfectly into side recesses. The bedrooms are lined with painted …
