Castle Chambery (73)

This exceptional ensemble steeped in history was constructed between the 11th and 16th centuries. Set at an altitude of some 550 metres on a rocky escarpment overlooking the Combe de Savoie, this entirely listed masterpiece of pre-classical military architecture commands an absolutely breathtaking panoramic view from Mont Blanc to the Vercors mountain range. Originally a primitive keep dating from the late 11th century, further construction over the 14th and 16th centuries added a 23-metre high 6-storey square keep topped by a crenellated parapet, an artillery tower, a guard room, a watchtower, an entrance chatelet, a chapel, a defensive vaulted underground gallery pierced with loopholes, a haute-cour, a basse-cour and a medieval garden… Often referred to as “la Bastille Savoyarde”, this impregnable fortress successively served a prison, and later hosted illustrious personalities… Partial restoration in the 19th century by architect Denarié allowed the ensemble to become residential, and it today features several suites of reception rooms, and numerous bedrooms including a monumental master bedroom boasting a majestic décor. Unquestionably one of the most remarkable and best-preserved fortresses in the magnificent Savoie department. Details on request.
