Castle Coeuvres-et-Valsery (02)

Château de Coeuvres-Valsery - Meeting place of Henri IV and Gabrielle d'Estrées in 1590 - Original and dreamlike Renaissance mannerist castle, built for the Dukes of Estrées in the middle of the 16th century, completed around 1575. Henri IV met Gabrielle d'Estrées there in 1590, the date of the beginning of their romantic and tumultuous affair. 6 hectares. To be completely restored. Villers-Cotterets, Picardy, Aisne, Hauts-de-France. Although it looks like a fortress, it is a pleasure chateau, and more precisely a party castle, given the off-centre plan characterized by an off-centre and small main building, the presence of four imposing pavilions and a possible large gallery disappeared to the south-west. The ambitious Estrées family, which included a French ambassador in Rome, had a festive and worldly reputation, close to the royal family; Coeuvres-Valsery will be erected as a marquisate then as a duchy-peerage for her. Of this ambitious complex built in the second half of the 16th century, close to the royal achievements, there remain only vestiges resulting from the demolitions of the Revolution and the bombardment of 1918 while the restoration initiated at the end of the 19th century had just been completed. finish. The environment, curiously implanted on a swamp confirms a baroque choice, which can find its explanation in the mannerism, current of thought and artistic of the XVIth century having a taste for the strange, the curious, the bizarre, the original; sometimes going to extremes of incongruity and bad taste. Architecture, A square plan, marked by large dry moats spanned by bridges on two sides, confined by slightly projecting square corner pavilions. The architecture is made of beautiful limestone stonework, the walls of the moat are slightly sloped. The most remarkable element is the so-called Henri IV pavilion to the west, square in plan topped with a large four-sided roof, attached to a square stair tower topped with a dome; on the side a low wing. The windows are mullioned and transom, skylights with arched pediment. Beautiful moldings on the facades, windows with bands. Inside this pavilion, a large room adorned with a neo-Renaissance fireplace, black and white floor, ceiling with beams and joists decorated with paintings and crests, low panelling. Two other rooms. A stone spiral staircase. Upstairs, a large room without any decor, two other rooms. A great peak. On the south-east side, a superb cryptoporticus on which the wooden gallery may have stood, it includes a series of vaulted rooms, in particular the large kitchens with their superb stereotomy. Beautiful stone slab floors. A second basement level houses flooded galleries. Remains of the stairway pavilion with two semicircular bays, straight staircase with banister under a semicircular vault. To the North-East, outbuildings, largely rebuilt after the First World War, in the centre, a porch house topped with a four-sided roof, attached to a staircase turret topped with a dome. Inside, a few rare original elements, a stone spiral staircase, a neo-Renaissance fireplace. Nice volume on the first floor of the porch. Character : Gabrielle d'Estrees. Born in Coeuvres-Valsery in 1573, died in Paris in 1599. A woman with a tumultuous life, whose mother was already described as frivolous, the siblings of seven sisters were called 'the seven deadly sins' by Madame de Sévigné, the father saying that Coeuvres-Valsery was 'a hutch for whores'. The family having great social ambitions, it already cumulated important charges and functions, Gabrielle met King Henri IV at Coeuvres-Valsery in 1590, through her lover. The King courted her ardently, returning especially to Coeuvres-Valsery, after six months, she yielded. He wanted to marry her, even going so far as to announce their marriage in public at a party at the Louvre on February 23, 1599; she died shortly after April 10, 1599 while carrying the child she had had with Henry IV, certainly as a result of her pregnancy, although she showed all the signs of poisoning, which for a long time hovered over the doubt about the cause of his death. Henri IV covered the d'Estrées family with titles and offices. Gabrielle's father, Antoine d'Estrées was Governor of Ile de France, her brother François-Annibal, Bishop of Noyon, French Ambassador to Rome, her sister Abbess of Maubuisson. historical origin, - Villiers family - 1552 Purchase by Jean d'Estrées. - 1552-1575 construction work on the current castle. - 1573 Birth of Gabrielle d'Estrées in Coeuvres-Valsery. - 1575 Death of Jean d'Estrées, grandfather of Gabrielle d'Estrées. - 1590 Visit of Henri IV to Coeuvre-Valsery who meets Gabrielle d'Estrées there. - 1739, The degraded castle passes to Le Tellier. - 1793-1795 sale as national property, demolition and fragmentation of the estate - 19th century, purchase by the Berthiers de Sauvigny who carried out major restoration work at the end of the 19th century - 1918 Bombings during the Battle of the Marne. - Around 1920 restoration work in war damage. - 1953 Sale to the town of Madeleine-les-Lille, which set up a summer camp there. - 1974 Conversion into a retirement home. Castle Compiegne (60)

A splendid 17th-century chateau with a large horse stable and 60 hectares of grounds in France’s Oise department. Two stone pillars crowned with urns flank a wrought-iron entrance gate at the end of a discreet village street. The gate opens into the property’s main driveway. This driveway runs alongside a French formal garden, down the side of the chateau and round to its court of honour. A feudal castle once stood on this site, which was a barony from the 13th century. The first stone of today's edifice was laid in 1636, as a lintel engraving tells us, on this land that once belonged to the Duchy of Burgundy but that became French when absolutism was bolstered under King Henry IV of France. The basement, underground vaults and foundations date back to this era. The chateau is typical of the 17th-century transformation of seigneurial dwellings into leisure chateaux – this chateau underwent changes that were characteristic of this great century in French history. The water-filled moat, made on older foundations, was probably dug out in the 19th century. A few buildings and a large farm complex with an open courtyard were also added to the estate during the Bourbon Restoration. The last major changes were made to the chateau at the end of the 19th century. During the Belle Époque, life in the chateau was vibrant and cheerful. But this gaiety only lasted up to the First World War. The property was a direct victim of the first assaults in this war – the Germans occupied it and in 1917 partially destroyed it. Yet in 1926 the edifice was rebuilt in exactly the same way as it looked before, thanks to the insistence and passion of its owner at the time. So, once again, the building became a grand dwelling of stone and slate. This magnificent chateau surrounded by a water-filled moat stands out for its tall elevations of dressed stone punctuated with six bays arranged symmetrically: three on each side of a curved avant-corps. The building has four floors. A slate roof crowns it. Two pavilions flank its north side. The position of this towering chateau, perched proudly upon a vast terrace, adds to its majestic bearing. From its court, the tall edifice looks out at a rural landscape beyond a splendid foreground: a French formal garden where manicured lawns and neatly trimmed hedges surround the grand building. In the distance, age-old trees dot a lush backdrop punctuated with thick groves and meadows that seems to stretch endlessly away. Lastly, on one side of the grounds, a collection of outbuildings with roofs of flat tiles completes the property. These fine annexes are just as elegant as the chateau itself and are mainly designed for horses.

Castle Fontainebleau (77)

A mid-18th century chateau and its numerous outbuildings near Vaux-le-Vicomte, in one of the first English-style landscaped parks in France. Extending over an area of around 70 hectares, the at first sight unremarkable property conceals a setting where nature, discreetly magnified by human hands, appears to have offered its hospitality in return. As you approach the chateau from the west, the quadruple avenue of centuries-old chestnut trees draws all eyes to the chateau. Past a stone bridge guarded by two terracotta lions, an impressive wrought iron double gate crowned with floral scrolls opens onto the paved main courtyard, embellished with symmetrical flowerbeds “à la française” and rows of lime trees on either side. The initial impression is of a classical building, with its central dressed stone structure flanked by two low wings and topped by a slate Mansard-style gambrel roof. However, the earliest traces of the feudal stronghold date back to the 12th century, around 1180. At that time, there was a medieval castle 'flanked by four towers, surrounded by moats filled with water, protected by a drawbridge, with a chapel, garden, woods and pond'. The estate subsequently passed into the hands of various aristocratic and bourgeois families. In 1750, the buildings were destroyed by a fire. The medieval building was then replaced by a chateau designed for recreation. All that remained of the original castle were the noble features, including the dovecote, which is still standing today. This was the era of classicism: the chateau was erected between courtyard and garden to follow the path of the sun. In fact, it is modelled on the layout of a Parisian townhouse, with a two-storey central building topped by a Mansard roof. With a slightly projecting avant-corps, it is flanked on either side by two low wings with arcades topped by flat roofs and crowned with stone Medici pots. The north wing is extended at right angles by a small gallery that links the chateau to the outbuildings and hereby forms a paved base-court, separated from the main courtyard by a symmetrical wall. The former stables and flat-tiled outbuildings, which have been converted to host events, surround this base-court. To the south, a gate leads to a vast walled kitchen garden with a greenhouse. There is another southern gate leading to a walled garden with an orangery and a maze of hornbeam hedges. To the east lies the English-style landscaped parkland. Beyond the perimeter walls, a gardener's lodge, former outbuildings and 52 hectares of woodland complete the property.

Castle Etampes (91)

An elegant 18th century chateau and its neo-Romanesque indoor chapel in the Essonne valley, 35 km south-east of Paris. The present chateau was re-built in a classical 18th century style on the foundations of an older castle around 1850. Past the entrance gate leading directly to the main courtyard with a central circular lawn, the chateau comes into view. At the rear of the chateau, parklands planted with centuries-old trees provide the backdrop for a pastoral scene that stretches as far as the river.
