A 13th century, medieval castle, surrounded by 17 ha of parklands, forest and meadows, near to the village of Lautrec, 30 minutes from Albi, in the Tarn department.
Lautrec, a medieval village in the Cocagne Country, belongs to the envied circle of the “Most Beautiful Villages of France” and the “Outstanding, Tasteful Sites”. A former viscounty, it was home to the family, from which the illustrious painter, Toulouse-Lautrec, descended.
This authentic, medieval castle, built in the 11th century, once housed the viscounts of Lautrec. Its construction came down through the ages until the 16th century when it was besieged during the Wars of Religion.
Abandoned for five centuries, it has been restored by skilled craftsmen, using lasting, good quality, traditional methods.
The castleThis square-shaped building is flanked by two towers, one round and the other square. A gothic-arched entrance door is defended, on one side, by a square tower with a watch-turret, featuring a candlesnuffer roof, and, on the other side, by a round tower. On the first floor of the latter, a trilobal, gothic window was once part of a chapel. The castle courtyard is reached via a door with refined stone keystones. This building still has a monumental fireplace and a vestibule, featuring crossed ribbed vaults. Immense cellars and dungeons are to be found under the castle. The south facade provides a completely unobstructed view, this panoramic vista taking in the Pyrenean mountains.
Ground floor
A carriage doorway opens directly into a polygonal courtyard, with medieval paving, dressed stone arches and stained-glass windows. The authenticity of this medieval courtyard bears superb witness to this era. A heavy door, studded with large nails, opens into the vestibule, enhanced by a spiral stone stairway. On one side of the vestibule is a large kitchen with exposed ceiling joists, whilst the other side provides access to a large, extremely bright lounge, where a monumental fireplace takes pride of place. Two, meticulously decorated bedrooms open directly on to the parklands. Each has its own shower room, with terracotta floor tiles.
First floor
This level, reached via the round tower constructed in the 11th century, provides access to a very spacious lounge, with exposed stone walls and a fireplace. Each of the three, very large bedrooms has its own fireplace and a meticulously decorated bathroom. Communicating via a corridor, a vast lounge, with mullioned windows, could be transformed into a reading room or somewhere for residents to be alone.
Second floor
This level is taken up by four bedrooms, with exposed ceiling beams, a bathroom and a shower room.
The parklands
The castle is surrounded by 17 ha of parklands, meadows and fields. Next to the castle, a swimming pool area, with its summer kitchen, looks out for as far as the eye can see over the countryside, free of all audible and visual nuisances.
