Constructed on a promontory in the midst of a regional nature park, a majestic, 13th century, medieval castle set in 16 hectares.
This castle is an hour from the Saint-Tropez beaches and 15 minutes by helicopter from Cannes, in an internationally renowned tourist area just outside of the Provencal medieval village that it has jealously guarded for centuries. Both the castle and its gardens are listed and have panoramic views over the regional nature park which forms their setting.
Monumental gates open on to an impressive gravel driveway, bordered by plane and fruit trees, which leads towards the castle’s perimeter wall, surrounded by an esplanade, laid to lawn and planted with Italian-style terraced gardens. These gardens are reached via stone steps, under which are concealed three cellars housing Roman-style sculptures. Further stone steps go down to the swimming pool. Two 18th century pavilions and an orangery keep an eye on the tiered gardens planted with cypress trees as well as boxwood and, on a lower level, on a grove of truffle oak trees. A helipad on the main esplanade dominates the hectare of vines that slopes down to the base of the castle. The latter’s elegant, square silhouette is embellished with four tall towers that stand out against the sky with the relief of the Lubéron mountains in the distance and a lake further down.
The chateauThe medieval perimeter wall opens on to a square main courtyard via a central, heavy wooden door, topped with a brattice. The impressive medieval facade was redesigned in the 17th century and now features wide openings on its four levels, topped with a hip roof. It keeps watch on the four corner towers with their candlesnuffer roofs, covered with glazed, fish-scale tiles reflecting the colours of all four seasons. On either side of the porch providing entrance to the courtyard are the old stables and a building in use as a garage. On one side of the main facade are 2 levels providing accommodation for a caretaker whilst, on the other, against a perimeter wall, a majestic fountain, with pool and trumeau, is engraved with the year 1770. A flight of curved steps goes up to the main, semi-circular arched, heavily studded entrance door, enhanced with a surround and an external, richly sculpted, moulded stone pediment.
Ground floor
The heavily studded door opens into a vast reception vestibule, with flagstones as well as stone cornices and moulding. The listed dining room is revealed in all its finery with its ceiling featuring gilt decorative plasterwork, its fabric-covered walls and its stone fireplace enhanced with a majestic, gold-leaf trumeau. It is followed by a kitchen, laid out under a vault and steeped in light, which features flagstones as well as a monumental fireplace, housing an integrated oven, and enough space to include an eating area. Three stone steps lead to a pantry, nestling in an adjoining corner tower, which opens on to the outside. A door in the main entrance hall leads to a consecrated, vaulted chapel, with its sacristy set in a corner tower. Another door provides access to a vaulted room, with terracotta floor tiles and a trapdoor, leading to the basement. A third door opens into a vaulted, stone exhibition room. A machine room is cleverly concealed in the adjoining corner tower. A monumental stairway, facing the main entrance, has stone steps up to the first-floor landing and then steps covered with terracotta tiles. It also features outstanding, listed, wrought iron railings which continuously accompany the stairway to all levels.
First floor
The stairway goes up to a landing, spanning approx. 71 m² with a high French ceiling, terracotta floor tiles, just like the rest of the floor, and a trumeau fireplace. It opens into a stateroom, spanning approx. 86 m², with a panoramic view, a monumental fireplace and a recess …
