A chateau surrounded by its outbuildings, converted in a sustainable way respectful of the environment, amidst 5 ha of land in Burgundy.
This property, converted with great ecological respect, stands in the heart of the Puisaye region. Numerous lakes are to be found amongst oak forests, sunken pathways and natural areas with Natura 2000 classification. This estate is near to shops and just a few kilometres from a train station with 70-minute links to Paris-Bercy. The nearest town, famous for its Saturday morning market, was Pierre-Larousse’s birthplace. Well-known local villages include Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye where Colette spent his childhood, Saint-Fargeau and its castle which housed “La Grande Mademoiselle”, followed by academician Jean-d'Ormesson. Numerous 13th century churches still have their original decor. A large number of concerts are held every summer during the “Estivales en Puisaye-Forterre”, a French classical music festival.
A gravel drive goes around the property and can be used for parking cars. The chateau is surrounded by several outbuildings, including one more impressive than the others as it constitutes a house. Parklands planted with trees over a hundred years old include an orchard, with pear, mulberry and plum trees, as well as an immaculately kept vegetable garden.
A terrace on the north-east side of the chateau looks down on to the rolling countryside. Several entrances provide access to the property, one of which features large, spiked, wrought iron gates.
The chateauThis chateau dates from the 18th century and was extended through the ages up until the early 20th century, a time when revamping and land restructuring throughout the estate as well as enhancement and modernisation works were carried out. The building comprises three sections: a main building and two pavilions, the bigger one of which stands out courtesy of its belvedere constructed in the 19th century. The particularity of the building resides in the white limestone that brings out the Burgundy blue of the miscellaneous railings. Almost all of the fanlights above the openings are glazed, which makes the inside of the building extremely luminous. The chateau facade is enhanced with toothed jambs. The framing around the windows is accompanied with moulding in the form of medallions, depicting foliage. Above the French windows, in the central section of the building as well as in the pavilion, are cornices with bevelled dripstones. The windows are enhanced with moulded architraves and the tops of the openings are very often adorned with moulded motifs.
The architecture combines several roof types, a slate gable roof, featuring roof dormers, then two pavilion roofs. The facade facing the parklands, on the north-east side, reflects quite a different architecture. Two turrets with candlesnuffer roofs and two pavilions, one of which is round. The main pavilion has a semi-circular terrace with square, pear-shaped balusters.
Adjoining the chateau, a building which could house a function room.
Ground floor
Double, glazed doors open into a bright entrance hall. The floor is paved with multi-coloured cement tiles, depicting stylised foliage. A second set of double, glazed doors leads to a winding stairway. Large-framed panels set the tone. A fairly wide, very bright vestibule, with strip pattern parquet flooring, provides access to a fully fitted kitchen, illuminated via a window which looks out over the parklands on the north-east side. Wainscoting and large-framed, oblong paintings decorate the room which, again, has strip pattern parquet flooring. It continues into a very convivial looking dining room. This room is characterised by lancet windows, exposed ceiling joists and an open-hearth fireplace. Black marble tiles extend the pink and black marble hearth tiles. This fireplace is enhanced …
