An old farm building, set on a hillside, looking down on the countryside in the Nièvre department, just 2 hours from Paris.
This country house is to be found near to a small market town with several local shops. A town which, notably, includes a listed, 16th century church.
Not far from the property, just a few minutes away, an SNCF train station provides 2-hour links to Paris-Gare-de-Bercy. The region is extremely popular amongst tourists: near to the property is an old, 14th century, potters’ village, Colette’s childhood home in Saint-Sauveur-en-Puisaye as well as St-Fargeau and Guédelon castles, both of which attract some 40,000 visitors every year.
The image of the countryside in the French department of Nièvre remains that of white cows, hedges and fencing that stand out in the rolling bocage countryside, covered with lush grasslands.
A little lane goes up to this property, with its house and its dominant view. Wooden entrance gates open on to a gravelled area intended for parking cars. A well-organised garden is laid out with several flower beds and various species of trees. An orchard, comprising apple, pear and Mirabelle plum trees, enhances the countrified character of the premises. The centre of a verdant lawn is enlivened with a spectacular view over the natural surroundings.
The main houseThis farm building was constructed in the 19th century. Standing, slightly raised, on a hillside, it has a dominant view over the countryside.
The facade of the house features several small-paned windows. The openings are double or single windows that act as a reminder of the age of the building. They are not all the same: some have one or two casements and are protected by solid shutters, typical of rural constructions. They are composed of tongue and groove planks, reinforced by crossbars and flush-mounted strap hinges. The gable roof is covered with traditional, old, local tiles. When night falls, wall lights affixed to the facade illuminate a relatively large terrace which looks out over the lush natural surroundings. It is characterised by stone paving and wooden guardrails.
Ground floor
One of the entrances opens into a fully fitted, bright kitchen, generous in size as is often the case in the country. It is made extremely welcoming by its exposed ceiling beams and its old floor tiles. A winter lounge, on one side, is enhanced with a fireplace, currently housing a closed-hearth fire. The mantel above the hearth is made of local stone. This large room is dotted with small alcoves and numerous openings, including two French windows that open on to the terrace. The beams are painted white and terracotta floor tiles are still the order of the day. Not far from this main room is a first, good-sized bedroom, with a view over the orchard which is behind the house. A little corridor leads to a stairway that goes up to the first floor.
First floor
A small landing provides access to two comfortable bedrooms. Steeped in light, they are of a good size. One of them is enhanced with an open-hearth, stone and brick fireplace. Nearby is a summer lounge, its impressively high ceiling going up to a height of 5.90 m and its architecture unusual. This was once the old attic which has been converted. With parquet flooring, it features a superb beam system. A straight, wooden stairway goes up to a mezzanine which houses the last bedroom. This spacious area, embellished with an exposed roofing framework, leaves no-one indifferent. This lounge, with its mezzanine, could easily become a self-contained flat. The outbuildingA small outbuilding adjoins the main building. This small dwelling currently houses a woodshed, spanning approx. 12 m². It features highly decorative architecture, with several openings of different sizes, framed …
