In southern Ardèche, in the heart of an ancient city an impressive 19th century residence with its caretaker’s lodge.
At the gates of Provence, perched on a rocky spur, the ancient city was built around a 12th century chateau. Its cobbled streets with their overhead arcades, old houses and mansions are typical of the region. All shops and amenities are at hand. The Saturday-morning market is a must for lovers of local products and in the summer, there is a night market every Wednesday. Its proximity to the Ardèche gorges, Ardèche mountains and the Mont Gerbier de Jonx, make it an undeniable tourist attraction.
One hour by car from Montélimar and its TGV station linking it to Paris in three hours.
In 18th and 19th centuries, wool, cambric and silk handkerchief factories settled in the Ardèche valley and the city became the capital of silk. The residence was built, at that time, by a rich industrialist.
Its prime location and attractive wooded garden are certainly an advantage. The residence is attached to caretaker’s lodge and both open out on to a small unoverlooked interior courtyard.
The main houseThe house, built above a cellar, spans two storeys plus a converted attic and stands in front of a small walled garden. An iron gate surrounded by two tall pillars provides access. The facade is rendered and features wide symmetrical bay windows. In the middle, a porch way, with a new canopy topped by a small balcony opens on to the garden. It is in line with the garden gate.
On a lower level of the garden is a large garage with room to accommodate several cars.
Ground floor
A heavy wooden door opens on to a long central hallway with multi-coloured cement floor tiles. Half way down the hallway, two large stone arches mark the bottom of the central staircase and its stone steps leading to the upper floors. The hall opens out on to the garden via a porch way. The adjoining reception rooms look out over the garden. A dining room next to the kitchen is heated by a fireplace topped by an elegant trumeau. The floor in this room as well as in the large lounge is a marquetry-style walnut parquet flooring with geometric motifs. The central medallion is echoed in the stucco rosette moulding on the ceiling. A marble shell fireplace. The lounge leads into a library with an adjoining boudoir. On the other side of the long hallway, five bedrooms and bathrooms with toilets. The master bedroom with bathroom en-suite is accessed directly from the hall. It features a red marble fireplace, walnut parquet flooring and ceiling with salient plasterwork decor. A bathroom and a toilet. One of the bedrooms looks out over a small private courtyard. Two other bedrooms are close by. One of them features a marble fireplace. Both have their own bathroom and toilet. Two more bedrooms are situated near the entrance, with a bathroom and toilet.
First floor
The first floor is accessed via the central staircase or the interior courtyard shared with the caretaker’s lodge. This floor has been renovated to make an independent housing unit. The staircase leads to a long hallway with red terracotta floor tiles, then a lounge and adjoining dining room separated by small-paned arched French doors. A Napoleon III fireplace with columns decorates the lounge. Both lounge and dining room have parquet flooring. Between two bay windows overlooking the garden, a marble fireplace with decorative acanthus leaf corbels is topped by a trumeau. Close by a small kitchen. The hall leads to another more spacious kitchen, as well as two bathrooms and spacious parquet-floored bedrooms each with period fireplaces.
Second floor
The bedrooms here were those once used by servants or silk workers. The lay out of this floor is the same as on the lower floors. A long central hallway leads to room after room.
Base level
A stone …
