A stronghold house, its swimming pool, its outbuildings and its parklands with age-old trees, in a residential area dominating the town of Périgueux.
Set in the inner suburbs of Périgueux, county town of the Dordogne, the district is predominantly residential with local shops, cultural and sports centres, a park near to the river and a few architectural gems, which include this house. A hospital is but 4 km away, Francheville Clinic and the town centre are 2.5 km away, whilst slip roads for the A89 are 10 km away.
Tall, remote-controlled gates form the only entrance to this property, fully enclosed and protected by various hedges, low walls and the walls of neighbouring houses. Dotted throughout the parklands are a very old, venerable boxwood and miscellaneous species such as blue cedar, Douglas pine, oak, maple, lime, yew, olive, walnut, fig, cherry, oleander, crepe myrtle, lilac, hydrangea, rose and wisteria, all of which provide the residents with shade, flowers and fruit. The garden shed and the workshop are invaluable for maintaining this verdant haven. Cars can be parked on the property. Two terraces to the north and west make it possible to take full advantage of the mild local climate, barbecues and even a table tennis table. The protected swimming pool and its terrace are distanced from the house at the end of garden.
The stronghold houseThe central rectangular building, spanning two levels under a converted attic floor, is flanked, on the south side, by a square tower dominating the property, a defensive “bolet” or covered porch, closed by a wrought iron gate and a room linking them. A second adjoining building protrudes from the north side. The buildings are topped with a completely asymmetrical gable roof, covered with Roman tiles. The polygonal shape of this house is harmonious. No less than seven openings provide entrance to the inside of this house. However, the actual, studded, wooden front door, adorned with wrought iron, is set on the south side in a section protruding in relation to the square tower.
Ground floor
The main entrance hall is also used as a landing as it houses a bush-hammered cement stairway. The old floor is paved with wide flagstones. The walls are composed of exposed and pointed or completely rendered quarry stone blocks, leaving exposed the splayed surrounds framing the doors, opening into the study in the tower as well as the lounge. The latter features a large picture window, beyond which has been hewn an L-shaped terrace, surrounded by a low stone wall. Generally speaking, a few steps precede the doorway to each room. Such is the case to enter the dining room, a vast adjoining room, with exposed joists, ending with a monumental fireplace against the gable wall. On the south side, a door leads, with a packed mud floor, to the defensive “bolet” and its stone stairway. In the building on the north side, the kitchen opens on to a terrace and provides access to a cellar, laid out in an old underground water storage tank, a bathroom, a laundry-boiler room and a garage.
First floor
This level is reached via two stairways: one inside and the other outside. The latter goes up to a balcony, surrounded by a solid stone guardrail with an open balustrade. The eaves are supported by sculpted stone columns. A central hall area, with parquet flooring, provides access to the various areas, including a separate toilet and a communal shower room. One bedroom, illuminated by windows on the north and west sides, features exposed joists, whitewashed or panelled walls and a fireplace, with a wooden mantel. It is bright and has its own bathroom as well as a cupboard. A second bedroom features a mullioned window. The building protruding on the north side houses a suite, with a large bedroom, enhanced with a fireplace, a dressing room, a bathroom and a separate …
