42 km from Uzès, 66 km from Avignon (TGV train station), 1¼ hours from Nîmes (TGV train station) and product of the Renaissance era, the large village stands on the heights between the Ardèche and the Cèze gorges, on the edge of the Cévennes mountains. The landscape, with its air of Tuscany, combines diversified farming with the wild scrubland, providing a sumptuous decor. The bustling market town holds a variety of events to attract large numbers of the general public and is one of the main tourist centres in the south of the French department of Ardèche.
It is accessed from the street via gates flanked by stone pillars. On one side, the old silkworm nursery with doors opening into an area in use as a garage; opposite, the large, luxurious home. Further away, to the east, is a holiday rental accommodation unit and, at a slight distance on a higher level, a swimming pool.
The landSpanning a surface area of approx. 2,700 m², the plot of land is planted with Mediterranean species and crisscrossed with gravel pathways. Its upkeep is easy: a 30,000-litre water reserve tank as well as two wells, each with a 30,000-litre capacity, are more than enough for watering purposes and also provide water for the property’s toilets and washing machines. At a distance on a terrace bordered by low stone walls is a 9x4 m heated swimming pool, with a salt filtration system, protected by a retractable cover.The houseWith origins that are no doubt much older and reflecting a style and layout similar to a Provencal Bastide house, with regularly-spaced openings, its current appearance and decor of light-coloured exposed stone, date from redesigning works carried out at the end of the 18th century. it is surrounded on three sides by a terrace raised via a few steps in relation to the ground, forming a slight pedestal.
Recently cleverly restored and insulated, it spans four levels, two of living space, one comprising superb vaulted cellars and the old, recently converted attic. The living space spans a floor surface area of approx. 380 m².
Double entrance doors on the ground floor, topped with a sundial, open on to a stairway with, wrought iron railings, dating from the first half of the 19th century. The latter, like certain fireplaces, bear witness to works carried out at this time. All the floors are of stone with underfloor central heating. On one side, a lounge with a French window opening on to the terrace which communicates with a kitchen via a large glazed opening. A stone fireplace comprises cooking features and a glazed door opens on to the terrace. A corridor leads from the entrance hall to a living room composed of two rooms, the separating wall of which has been removed, a study. This through lounge has a white stone fireplace under a stucco trumeau. Following on, a kitchen on one side, a laundry room on the other, a toilet and a door to the boiler room.
The first floor comprises four bedrooms with views over the undulating countryside with the Cévennes mountains in the distance and over the garden. Three large bathrooms with baths, one of which is a whirlpool bath, toilets and showers, with underfloor heating and radiators. Cupboards in the corridor.
On the upper level, the former attic space has been converted into three bedrooms and a shower room.
A door in the stairwell on the ground floor leads to stairs going down to the vaulted cellars. Taking up the entire level, they are illuminated and can also be reached via the street side. Their high ceiling made it possible in bygone days to divide them into two levels with wooden flooring.
