They were peasant builders who created a number of hamlets in the region and the the spirit and knowledge of this spontaneous architecture has been preserved. This property has an unusual history, starting with the epoch when houses were built directly on stone, in order to survey the valley and thus prevent invasion. History has certainly left its mark in this place … When one mounts the deep, straight valley, one glimpses in the south, an uniquely formed peak with an ancient Gallic fortress, called an Oppidum by the Latin writers. The hill has the look of a truncated cone where the vertical escarpments create fortified walls. This hamlet rises on the western flank of the peak, with its fifteen or so rural dwellings. If the summit of the plateau and the interior of the Gallic fortifications contain only a few Gallic-Roman remains, in contrast the hillside with the hamlet is littered with traces of this era. The ground is covered with fragments of bricks, amphora jars and pottery.~~It is in this place that we discover this property of more than 6 hectares, which dominates the other dwellings. A landscaped garden, watered with fresh water from a bore, is enhanced by a recent large 4 x 15m swimming pool of good quality with submerged cover. Around the farmhouse, a hectare of perfectly fenced land protects the vegetable garden, petanque ground and provides privacy. The panoramic views are a delight for the eye, from the various outdoor garden spaces and from the numerous windows carefully placed to enjoy the scenery from the interior. On the lower level, a savvy combination of authenticity and contemporary design has allowed the creation of the kitchen and dining room (48m²) opening onto a large stone-walled terrace. An open fireplace ensures pleasant winter evenings. The traditional terra cotta tiled floors are in harmony with the vaulted veilings. On the same level, two large bedrooms enjoy the coolness of the old stone, one of 33m² with a study space and the other of 18m², both with baled clay tiling and vaulted ceilings. A small salon, bathroom and toilet. On the next floor, at garden level, a large living room with high ceiling has a mezzanine area with piano. This room is accessible via a large retractable glass door, from a terrace covered with a beautiful rampant wisteria. A parental suite of 60m² is comprised of a bedroom and study (or further bedroom) and a light-filled bathroom with shower, bath and toilet. Finally, an en-suite bedroom with private bathroom and separate toilet. Another 33m² carefully renovated building contains a guest house, with bedroom on a mezzanine, living area, bathroom and toilet. A place that has sprung from a wonderfully authentic frugality. A property selected by Botella and Sons (since 1989). Ref: 11663
