A character, Empire-style residence and its 3 ha of parklands in a village in the French department of Ille-et-Vilaine.
Fifty minutes east of Rennes towards the French department of Mayenne, in a little market town away from all nuisances. The charming town of Vitré, with all amenities, is nearby. The motorway to Paris is quickly reached as is the TGV train station. This attractive village, surrounded by verdant countryside, is crossed by a river.
This property opens on to a little lane via old gates. It stands on the site of a modest parish building which was transformed by a French General of the Empire around 1815. The house still has traces of its period decoration, notably on a chimney breast where a swarm of king bees are associated with Brittany's ermine flecks. Other old features include parquet floors, marble fireplaces, panelling and ceiling rosettes. The courtyard comprises an attractive outbuilding, used for garage purposes, and miscellaneous storage areas. Behind the house are small parklands, planted with superb old trees, a leisure pavilion and a vast period greenhouse. A kennel acts as a reminder of the time when the masters of the house went hunting. The parklands are enclosed by an old stone wall and rustic hedges. At the bottom of the garden, a small passageway through the undergrowth provides access to a surface area of about two hectares, currently home to horses, where a very recent shelter stands. A little stream runs along the end of the grazing lands, bordered by old trees. A small lake, featured on the land registry plans, has an old walkway leading to an islet.
The houseThis residence, spanning approx. 315 m² of living space over three levels, comprises stone lower sections built over a cellar, all topped with a natural slate roof. The quoins on the ground floor are made of stone, whilst those upstairs are of freestone, as is the framing around certain windows. The lime and sand rendering gives the facades a homogeneous appearance.
Ground floor
The vestibule, with its cement floor tiles, leads, left, to a large dining room with parquet flooring, a fireplace and a door to a 20 m², separate kitchen, a luminous room, in pristine condition, with a back door leading out to the garden. A corridor leads to the fully restored billiards' room, with its mahogany wood panelling, as well as to a toilet and a back kitchen or storage room. An internal stairway provides access to the cellar. On the parklands side is a large, extremely luminous study, with an elegant fireplace, opening on to the garden via a French window. Adjoining the study is a large, 35 m² lounge, with a superb moulded ceiling and old parquet flooring, where a finely wrought, white marble fireplace takes pride of place. A wonderful, wooden stairway leads upstairs from the hall.
First floor
A corridor provides access to four superb bedrooms, spanning floor surface areas between 11 and 25 m². They all have parquet flooring, a fireplace and unblemished decoration. This floor comprises two shower rooms with toilets, one of which communicates with one of the bedrooms. There is also a bathroom with a toilet. One of the bedrooms has a dressing room. In a hall area is a large room currently in use as a second kitchen.
Second floor
The stairway goes up to a hall area which leads, on one side, to two vast bedrooms, each with a fireplace, and to a superb attic with cupboards on the other side.
The parklands
These landscaped parklands, spanning approx. 1 ha, are planted with many noble species. Slightly sloping, they extend out behind the residence.
pavilion

Greenhouse
This vast greenhouse, backing on to a wall of the house, still has all of its original features. It adjoins a boiler room that provides ...
