An old, 19th century school and its swimming pool in an 8,500 m² garden between the Emerald coast and Mont-Saint-Michel Bay.
This property stands in a village, with a few local shops, just ten minutes from Dol-de-Bretagne. A quiet, little town, it has all amenities required for everyday life, schools and a TGV train station with 2½-hour links to Paris. The beaches of the much-appreciated seaside resorts of Saint-Malo and Dinard are a 30-minute drive away, as is the Rance Valley. This location between land and sea enables residents to take advantage of all green and coastal tourism activities and to explore the region’s wealth of heritage. Rennes, with its large infrastructures and its airport, is but 45 minutes away.
This house, constructed in the late 19th century, was long used as a school. The entrance to the property, protected by gates and high hedges, opens into a carparking area, with a carport, which precedes vast lawns, a swimming pool and a terrace, bordering the house. An outbuilding of similar construction is set at right angles. An extension with wide picture windows links the two buildings. A swimming pool in a verdant setting receives a maximum of sunlight. The garden continues at the back of the house and leads to a second terrace, an artist’s studio and a small outbuilding in use as a cellar. A wicket gate provides direct access to a meadow, spanning more than 0.5 ha, which directly borders a little road.
The houseThis 2-storey house is constructed from granite quarry blocks. The roof, extended by a projection, is covered with slate. The facade is encircled from one end to another by a large wisteria, resembling a string course. The openings feature dressed stone surrounds. Those on the second level are tall, arched, hanging roof dormers, with pediments, which are protected by railings. A roof dormer on one side houses a statue of Saint-Joseph. The rear facade has the same layout. The openings let copious amounts of through light into the house.
Ground floor
The entrance door opens into a vast hall, with a cathedral ceiling, where pride of place is given to a double wooden stairway, with two flights of stairs and candelabra balusters. An opening on one side leads to a fitted, semi-professional kitchen. It features a central unit with a granite worksurface. Very bright, this kitchen communicates via its large, pocket, picture window with a sheltered terrace. Its light-coloured Burgundy stone floor tiles blend beautifully with its white-painted, exposed ceiling beams. A monumental fireplace features a coat-of-arms.
On the other side of the hall, a vast reception room is composed of a dining area, a lounge, a bar and a billiard room. The panelled walls and the layout of the bar were designed and created by the previous owner of the premises, a cabinetmaker by trade. The carpeted floor and the wall-covering, reflecting its warm, dark colours, create a muted atmosphere. An adjoining summer kitchen communicates with the terrace and the swimming pool via wide picture windows. An opening leads to an outbuilding and a second lounge. The beams and joists are exposed and the walls fully lined with panelling. Following on are a room, given over to sport, a utility room and a workshop. Two horse loose boxes are installed at the end of the outbuilding. A stairway goes up to two attics that offer almost 150 m² of conversion potential.
First floor
The landing provides access to a main bedroom, with a dressing room and a bathroom, enhanced with wood and marble. A long corridor then leads to three bedrooms, two of which have their own shower room. They are followed by a bathroom, a linen room and a large study. The outbuildingsThe garden behind the house includes an artist’s studio, laid out in a little …
