A mansion house and its outbuildings near to the cathedral in the centre of Blois.
Blois is 160 km from Paris in the Loire Valley, classified as a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Standing on the river Loire, it is half-way between Orleans and Tours. Its train station provides 1½-hour links to Gare-d'Austerlitz. This old royal town, with its wealth of historic, architectural and natural heritage, is also one of the first to have been given the French “Territoires à énergie positive pour la croissance verte” (Positive energy territories for green growth) award.
The 17-metre-long facade is aligned with the adjoining buildings in a little street in a sought-after district of the town centre. Constructed during different eras, the buildings overlap one another. This property, laid out in a U-shape, is set out around a paved courtyard, extended by a wooded area and a patio. A central porchway, topped with a single floor of living space, opens into the courtyard. It is flanked, on one side, by the main, 3-storey house and, on the other, by an annexe house, also spanning three levels of living space and extended as far as the patio by storage areas and garages.
The mansion houseThis rectangular house is constructed over cellars. It spans three levels of living space and is topped with an attic floor, illuminated via three roof dormers. The roof is covered with slate. Enhanced with Virginia creeper, the facade features two Renaissance style, freestone, geminated, arched windows on the first floor, despite most of the building reflecting the mark of the 17th century. In the centre on the courtyard side, the single-storey above the porchway is half-timbered, with red and black masonry filler, topped with stained glass windows.
Ground floor
Once through the porchway, French windows, with small, diagonal-shaped panes, form the main entrance to the house and open into a vestibule. This welcoming room, with its bluish cement floor tiles, houses a wide stairway, with shallow, carpeted steps, going to the three upper floors. The kitchen can be reached from the porchway via a wooden opening, with a fanlight, as well as via the vestibule. This spacious fitted kitchen includes an eating area. Its three windows are aligned on the street side, their high position preventing furtive looks from passers-by. An impressive Louis XIV style door opens into a lounge. The latter is illuminated via two wide, south-facing windows overlooking the courtyard and three windows on the patio side.
First floor
The landing provides access, on one side, to a bedroom, with a dressing room and a shower room, with a toilet. On the other side, a corridor leads to a bathroom, a bedroom and then to a gallery, with red and blue stained-glass windows, laid out above the porchway. This gallery gives access to a second lounge via double doors, through light therefore floods in on both the street and the courtyard sides. On this level, the parquet flooring is laid in ladder or herringbone patterns and the windows are fitted with indoor or rolling shutters. Marble fireplaces have been preserved in the lounge and the bedrooms.
Second floor
The landing leads, on one side, to two adjoining bedrooms. On the other side are a study, a shower room, with a toilet, another bedroom and a door leading to the attic.The annexe buildingThe laundry room, reached via the porchway, is an old shop. This could easily be reopened on the road side should new owners wish to give it this vocation once again. A narrow spiral stairway, dating from the Renaissance period, goes up from the laundry room to a bedroom and a shower room, with a toilet, on the first floor which can also be reached via the gallery above the porchway.
