Standing proudly in the centre of the village and dominating the verdant Loire Valley, this property is protected from onlookers by tall stone walls. Once through the perimeter gates, visitors are impressed by the size and location of this haughty, large, luxurious home, overlooking its terraced garden. It is flanked by numerous buildings, one of the first of which is a chapel, almost a thousand years old. Beyond a gravel esplanade, an orchard is followed by a wooded garden, laid out in tiers down to the river, the crystal-clear water of which make this a renowned and outstanding site.
The large, luxurious homeWith architecture typical of the Loire Valley, this rendered, quarry-stone-block house spans two levels, featuring stone quoins and six bays. It is topped with a slate Mansard-style attic floor and roof which are enhanced with five roof dormers, topped with triangular of curved pediments.
Constructed in the 18th century over very old cellars, it is doubled in depth by an older building, dating from the late 15th or early 16th century, the upper rooms of which are reached via a 17th century wooden stairway, with turned balusters. An extension was added in keeping with the style of the premises at the end of the 19th or the beginning of the 20th century.
Ground floor
A few steps lead to the main entrance hall, paved with stone tiles featuring black marble inlaid decoration. Dominated by a quadrangular wooden stairway, with turned balusters, it provides access, on one side, to a vast room, with casement windows overlooking the garden as well as a white marble fireplace, and, on the other, to a living room of a similar size, laid out as a kitchen. To the rear of the latter, a secondary entrance leads to a pantry, a shower room, with a toilet, and a large games room, with a fireplace.
First floor
This level is composed of six bedrooms, with parquet flooring, five of which have a fireplace, and a shower room, with a toilet. These rooms face south (with views of the garden and the valley) or west (with a view over the village rooftops).
Attic
The attic space is taken up by five bedrooms (some with fireplaces) and a large storage area. A vast attic covers the entire house.The chapelThis Romanesque chapel, devoted to Saint-Martin, was referenced as of 1139 in a bull issued by Pope Innocent II confirming, amongst other things, its owner as Notre-Dame-de-Beaugency Abbey. In 1150, Eugène III took it from the abbey and gifted it to the nuns of the Benedictine Abbey of Beaumont-les-Tours who kept it until the French revolution. Its apse, no longer in existence, was no doubt destroyed in the 19th century during the construction of the building adjoining the east side which is not shown on the 1828 land registry. Its exposed, chestnut wood roofing framework, with truss bearing rafters and diagonally bridging in the rafter layout, could date back to the late 15th or early 16th century.
