An 18th century property, in town and yet secluded in more than 2 ha of parklands, in the midst of the French department of Lot-et-Garonne.
In a historic, character town, looking down on to the river Garonne, just an hour from Bordeaux via the motorway. Numerous daily train links make it possible to reach this urban area and, if necessary, to change trains for a link to Paris taking 2 hours.
Shops, amenities and interesting tourist sites nearby complete what this extremely attractive town, with 8,000 inhabitants, in the Lot-et-Garonne department, has to offer.
This property, completely hidden from the little road leading to a low-rise housing district, is in a dominant position, out of sight of onlookers courtesy of its tall iron gates and its dense verdant surroundings. Standing in enclosed, wooded parklands, this chateau is safe from any neighbouring constructions and, consequently, offers its residents the same feeling of isolation as vast rural properties. Visitors reaching the end of a driveway, shaded by majestic lime trees, are faced with buildings, laid out in a U-shape around a closed courtyard. Said buildings comprise a light-coloured, dressed stone residence, with two wings of outbuildings, constructed from red brick. The combination of these two architectural features gives the property a countrified appearance. These particularities are perfectly in keeping with the history of the premises which dates back to the 16th century, to the noble family responsible for its construction and to its successive middle-class and industrial owners.
Built from dressed stone between the 18th and 19th centuries, the current neo-classical style facade of the main building includes two projections, both of which feature sculpted pediments. The numerous openings framed with dressed stone surrounds, the stone cornices and the quoins bestow this house with unquestionable elegance. The building comprises a garden level that opens on to the exterior via several French windows, a first floor also featuring numerous openings and an attic floor, the walls of which feature small, half-moon-shaped windows.
And lastly, a dovecote, reflecting architecture typical of the south-west of France, completes this property with its south-facing gardens.
The chateauAdjoining the main entrance, the first wing extends southwards and is currently taken up by a complete suite, all on a level, as well as by a study, with an independent mezzanine, and a greenhouse. An extension, spanning approx. 100 m², was constructed in the 1980’s, making it possible to link the main residence and the second wing of outbuildings on the north side, thus creating the buildings’ U-shaped layout. All on a level, the through construction was designed to provide access to the inner courtyard, with its south-facing swimming pool and its spacious terrace, delimited by old stone balusters that look down on to a small stream on the north side. This west wing houses a garage, a storeroom and a boiler room as well as an upstairs area, not actually used for anything in particular.
Ground floor
The entrance door opens into a through vestibule which leads, at the end, to the inner courtyard, a unique passageway which provides access to a large study, with panelling and a mezzanine. It also houses a dressed stone stairway, with an open central stairwell and a wooden handrail, reflecting the patina of time. The ceiling in the entrance hall is moulded and the floor covered with terracotta tiles. On one side, double doors, adorned with panelling, open into a billiard room where tall cupboards line the walls. This room communicates with a lounge, laid with parquet flooring. Three openings set in the corner of the building look out over the parklands and let in copious amounts of light. A black marble fireplace, topped with a trumeau decorated with …
