A delightful residence and its guest house in the heart of a Renaissance town.
Twenty minutes from the TGV EST station (shuttle service) which puts Paris just 90 minutes away and 25 km from an A4 motorway slip road.
Ideally located 60 km from the large towns of Metz and Nancy and their international airport.
10 minutes from Madine Lake and its 18-hole golf course.
Saint-Mihiel is a small Renaissance town with approx. 5,000 inhabitants, in Lorraine Regional Nature Park, in the hollow of a valley surrounded by forests. Dubbed “Little Florence” due to its outstanding Renaissance heritage as well as its small pleasure port on the “Marne-Rhine Canal” and its 312 km of navigable waterways. This superb undulating region can be explored by renting a boat. On the heights of the old town, but not far from the centre and its shops as well as a hiking trail which plunges directly into the nearby forest.
This property comprises two separate houses.
Elegant gates open into the property’s courtyard with its old paving stones.
Standing on the right-hand side and spanning more than 300 m², the main residence, with its gable wall facing the road, is extended at right angles by the second house. The courtyard is closed on the left-hand side by the old town hall, an elegant, 16th century building, listed as a French historic monument. This first courtyard continues into a second cobbled courtyard which is closed by gates. These two areas span approx. 300 m². Behind the second house is an attractive lawned garden, enclosed by old stone walls. Said garden, with a surface area of approx. 500 m², includes a separate entrance door that opens on to another street.
The residenceStanding on the right-hand side of the gates and built of rendered quarry blocks, this residence is generously covered with Virginia creeper as of springtime, giving it a rustic appearance.
The interlocking tile roof is in a very good state of repair; the windows and French window are single glazed.
An elegant gazebo protects the entrance door with its stained glass windows.
Ground floor
The entrance door opens into a lobby closed by double doors adorned with coloured stained glass windows that lead into a vast hallway featuring its original cement floor tiles.
The warm, welcoming nature of this home can be felt immediately.
At the end of the hall is a shower room as well as the stairway that leads upstairs.
On the right are two rooms that overlook the street. Both are richly decorated with mouldings, panelling, marble fireplaces, mirrors with trumeaux and oak wood, herringbone pattern parquet flooring. One is furnished as a lounge; the other has a more open character for use, for instance, as a music or reading room. Its ceiling painted with cloud effects and adorned with four dainty medallions is a perfect illustration of the fine arts.
On the left-hand side of the corridor is the kitchen, looking out over the courtyard and having direct access to it via a French window. Although totally restored in 2019, its traditional Lorraine stone fireplace and its cement floor tiles have been elegantly preserved. A hall area lined with large painted cupboards, one of which conceals an access to a toilet as well as to a vaulted cellar, precedes a large dining room, opening via a French window on to the courtyard. Its floor is currently covered with carpeting that hides a pitch-pine wood floor. It has a wooden fireplace and an alcove which could be extended into a back room that is currently used for storing wood. Probably built in the 15th century, it still has its vaults and its fireplace which could be rehabilitated.
Half-story
The oak wood stairway with its straight flights is impressive. The railings at the foot of the stairway are richly ornate and resemble the prow of a ship. It is overlooked by a “School of Nancy” …
