A large, luxurious home behind a discreet facade, with a garden, an outbuilding and a swimming pool, on the heights of the town in Aire-sur-l'Adour.
Aire-sur-l'Adour, 1½ hours from Bordeaux as well as Pau and scarcely more than 30 minutes from Mont-de-Marsan. Along the Way of St James, in a strategic location between the Pyrenean Mountains, the Atlantic Ocean and the French department of Gironde. On the borders of the Armagnac and Vic-Bilh regions, famous not only for their “eaux-de-vie” spirits and wines, but also for their gastronomy. (Just a stone’s throw from Eugénie-le-Bains.) The old town, with its wealth of historic heritage, extends uphill from the river Adour. Its market and its shops also help to make this town particularly lively.
This property, in a quiet street looking down on to the town, stands behind a discreet facade, taking the form of a gable. The main building extends perpendicular to the street and creates two distinct areas. One is used for parking, whilst the other is a garden, where a swimming pool takes pride of place, amidst the surrounding trees and flower beds. A terrace has been laid out around the swimming pool, enhancing the area for those taking a dip.
The houseSpanning two levels under attic space which cannot be converted, the architecture of this house meets that which was generally expected of a large, luxurious urban home: discreet and functional, perfectly extended and filled with sober and welcoming, middle-class home comforts. Simplicity and quality are the key words. The main facade, opening on to the garden which now includes a swimming pool, features numerous symmetrically aligned windows, whilst the courtyard side, intended for the parking of cars, has fewer openings. The quarry stone block walls are all rendered or covered with Virginia creeper as on the garden side.
Ground floor
The front door opens, off the street, into a corridor running the full length of the house. It is covered with coloured cement tiles, typical of the area and the era. A lounge, the outside wall of which features three windows opening on to the garden side, is laid with parquet flooring. An ambulatory leads to a second lounge, in use as a library and smoking room, with parquet flooring and two windows overlooking the swimming pool. The latter is followed by a lobby with a toilet and a laundry room which also houses a boiler. A small conservatory, with floor tiles, opens on to the patio and the outbuilding. A fully fitted kitchen, also with floor tiles, includes a SMEG cooking range and an extraction hood. A storeroom, adjoining the kitchen, can be used as both a pantry and a larder. The dining room is illuminated by two windows and has an open-hearth fireplace, in good working order. This room also has floor tiles. A back stairway, with painted wooden railings, goes upstairs. A large room, used as a study and an exercise room, is laid with sea-rush matting. The feature that most attracts the visitors’ attention is the different types of floor coverings. Ranging from parquet flooring to colourful cement tiles, they give the building great decorative wealth. The changing from one type to another produces a perfectly controlled novelty effect. The ceilings vary in height between 2.59 and 3.06 m.
First level
This level is given over to bedrooms as well as their bathroom and toilet facilities. The floor coverings, as on the ground floor, follow the tradition of the region and the era, namely here that of parquet or wooden flooring. Some sections have, nevertheless, been covered with sea-rush matting. A spiral stairway goes up the ground floor corridor, arriving half-way along that providing access to the first-floor rooms. A first bedroom, with a separate shower room and toilet, is illuminated via three windows overlooking the garden. This level has a unique feature …
