A contemporary, waterside home, just 10 minutes from the centre of Amiens.
10 minutes from the centre of Amiens by car, 1½ hours from Paris via the A16 motorway, linked by a bus route to the urban area of Amiens, this property has a pastoral view over a river that flows alongside the garden. And yet, Amiens, capital town of Picardy and also known as the “Venice of the North” because of its canals and market gardens, is but a stone’s throw away. Somme Bay and the seaside resort of Le-Touquet are about an hour’s drive away.
This building was constructed in the middle of a village and yet everything appears distant, with an immense meadow on one side and an old 19th century textile plant on the other. This natural setting initially appears so near because the house is surrounded by water, in the form of two arms of the river, and it gives a completely unobstructed panoramic view, of which residents never weary. These grounds delimited by water have been ingeniously laid out. On one side, a gravel entrance courtyard is dotted with meticulously planted pine trees and boxwood bushes, inspiring a Japanese air. The other sides bordering the river are covered in grass. This property is protected from the road by a stone and brick perimeter wall.
The houseThis house is entered via an opening in a long, rectangular facade. Visitors are immediately struck by its solemn elegance. The slate roof completes an architectural style that can but bring Bauhaus to mind. The facades exude coherence in grey-blue hues but feature a wide variety of materials: glass for the windows, wood for the horizontal cladding as well as dry stone laid vertically and longwise. But the truth of this architecture is essentially to be found in the contrast of the two sections. The front of the house is transparent, airy and light, with nine picture windows letting copious amounts of light into the reception rooms. The rear is dense, compact and robust, with narrow windows protecting the night-time areas. This slightly raised house appears to be skimming above the water on the piles that can be glimpsed under the terrace.
Ground floor
The picture window, providing access to this home, opens directly into a vast living room that houses a lounge in its prow, a dining room and an American-style kitchen. Luminosity is at a maximum. Walls are replaced with glazing, giving views over the countryside and the water. The boundaries between the inside and the outside are blurred, like an invitation to explore the terrace which dominates the garden and provides a vista looking down on to the river. A square, central fireplace takes pride of place in this lounge which is followed by an eating area with its open-plan kitchen. The ceiling going up to a height of 6 metres adds a further contemporary note to this uncompromising architecture. This area features a mezzanine. The change in levels is enhanced with a spiral stairway, a walkway looking down on to the room, the exposed black roofing framework against a white background and the very linear, stainless-steel-coloured railings running all along. A black door provides access to the private areas via a central corridor leading to a study and three bedrooms, including the main bedroom. The latter comprises a first night-time section with a sliding picture window opening on to a terrace, directly above the river with a view over the meadow in the distance. The bed has a panoramic view. A second section comprises a bathroom, with an Italian walk-in shower and a bath. This very graphic, black and white room has first-class fixtures and fittings. All the floors are paved with grey tiles, making this level coherent.
First floor
The spiral stairway goes up to a mezzanine, its walkway leading to a bookshelf wall unit. On the other side, a bedroom, with strip pattern, oak wood parquet …
