A large, 18th century house, with a garden and a swimming pool, in Cotignac, a village steeped in history.
At the top of the cliff, two majestic Saracen towers keep watch on Cotignac. Benevolence is a quality not lacking from this place, Anne of Austria is its most illustrious personification. Classified as a “Village of character”, it is particularly pleasant to live in all year round. Just 20 minutes from Brignoles, 40 minutes from Verdon Gorges and Sainte-Croix lake, an hour from Aix-en-Provence’s TGV train station and the beaches along the Var coast. Evergreen oak, olive and almond trees, vines and lavender bushes mark the surrounding countryside. All shops are within walking distance.
This 18th century mansion house stands in a quiet street, planted with tall, centuries-old plane trees, shading one of the many fountains in the village. Once used for a bed & breakfast activity, it is in an excellent location, with a view over the roofs, covered with Roman tiles, and the distant hill. Its garden also includes a swimming pool.
The houseThe west-facing facade features ten windows, letting copious amounts of Mediterranean sunlight into all the living rooms.
There are two entrances: the main one is on a little square looked out over by the building; the second is via a narrow street at the back, where a few concealed steps lead to the garden laid out on a level with the top floor of the house.
An old stable is able to accommodate two vehicles.
Ground floor
A heavy door opens into a large vestibule where a stairway, enhanced with wrought iron railings, goes upstairs under a basket-handle arch. A little passageway leads to the old stable, now housing a garage, as well as to a large cellar. The ground floor is outstanding, amongst other things, because of its 3.5 m high ceilings, providing majesty and coolness.
First floor
The main door on the landing provides access to a flat with adjoining rooms comprising a kitchen, a lounge, a shower room, a separate toilet as well as two bedrooms, set on either side of the flat. Another door opens into a laundry room, a study as well as a linen room laid out in a large vaulted room. The old, small red, hexagonal floor tiles are traditional in Provence.
Second floor
A vestibule, with a separate toilet, leads to a vast bedroom, illuminated via two large windows. A shower room completes this area. The landing leads to another three bedrooms as well as two large bathrooms, one of which also includes a shower. The large Provencal stairway, with wooden nosing bearing the patina of time, continues up to a half floor. A heavy, old door opens on to a covered terrace. A few stone steps provide access to the garden and the swimming pool.
Third floor
Another stairway leads to the third floor, a section of the house which could be made independent, enabling the main part of the house to be used for a bed & breakfast activity. This level comprises a large flat, with a kitchen, a dining room, a bedroom, with a bathroom, and a large, corner lounge looking directly out over the village through four windows. Also, a summer lounge opens on to a terrace, looking down on to the garden. Above, a mezzanine is divided into a small lounge and an alcove bedroom which communicates with a shower room. This vast flat is well laid out. Wide lightwells, looking out at a sky, Mediterranean blue by day and starry by night, as well as windows on three facades of the building, create perfect continuity between the inside and the outside. The gardenThis hanging garden, on a level with the top floor of the house, is flat and enhanced with several shady terraces and alcoves, making it possible for residents to take advantage of the delights of the Mediterranean climate all year round. A lawn, …
