A fully restored, 19th century, south-facing house and its 1-ha parklands in Châtellerault.
Looking down on to Châtellerault plain, and its rich, notably architectural past with its Henri IV bridge, constructed by Jacques-Androuet-du-Cerceau, and its many 15th, 16th and 19th century mansion houses. The river Vienne flows alongside the town and recent development works have made it possible to stroll down by the river. The fiefdom of René-Descartes is now home to numerous cutting-edge companies, specialised notably in the aeronautical and automobile industries. The “Jazzelrault” and “Automne” festivals provide jazz and classical music enthusiasts with first-rate concerts and its Italian theatre offers an extensive programme shared with the National Theatre in Poitiers.
Châtellerault TGV train station, with its 1½-hour links to Paris, is a 4-minute drive away. Poitiers can be reached in 40 minutes and Tours in 50 minutes via the A10 motorway.
This property, standing at the end of a no-through road, is accessed via gates opening on to its parklands, crossed by a sinuous driveway. The two sections comprising the house are set at right angles to one another and are joined via a recently refurbished atrium. An outbuilding extends the house on one side. On the opposite side, a recent greenhouse accommodates fragile plants during the winter months and a garage is used for storing the equipment needed for maintaining the parklands.
The houseFormerly the country house of a local leading citizen in the 19th century, this house is composed of three sections. The first, a guest house, looks out over the plain and has a completely unobstructed view. When it was constructed, it constituted a certain architectural ambition with the building of engaged pilasters, a cornice and balusters, enhancing the roof. The exterior decoration of the second section is much plainer. And lastly, the atrium, adjoining this second section and constituting the third feature, has been redone in keeping with the property’s harmonious aesthetics. All the openings are double-glazed.
Ground floor
The house is entered via the atrium which opens into a vast, bright living room, with an open-plan kitchen as well as dining, lounge and study areas. A closed-hearth fire heats this huge living room. A first stairway goes upstairs from the study. Next to this stairway is a guest toilet, with its shower area. A door, near to the kitchen, opens into a laundry room. The floors are laid with large stoneware tiles. This atrium can also provide access to the guest house, once home to the leading citizen, which also has its own front door.
First floor
A bedroom, enhanced with a marble fireplace, has its own bathroom and toilet. Its original parquet flooring has been preserved. A passageway leading to the other section of the upstairs has been closed off in order to create a self-contained flat. The guest houseThis guest house, laid out inside the section where the leading citizen stayed, still has many of its original features.
