In a verdant district of a quiet town in the Lorraine region, an outstanding designer villa, inspired by the “School of Vienna”, in a garden with a pool.
An hour by car south-east of the Greater Nancy Area. The more prestigious towns of Alsace, Colmar and Strasbourg are respectively 60 and 80 minutes away by road. Motorways through the Rhine Valley, leading to south, north and east Europe can be reached in about the same amount of time.
The Vosges mountain snowfields are some 35 minutes away.
Direct trains take 2⅔ hours to reach Paris and Basel-Mulhouse airport is but 1½ hours away by car.
The town, where this property is to be found, has all administrative, commercial and educational facilities, including state and private primary and secondary schools as well as sixth form colleges, all with a good reputation.
This property, in the Lorraine region, stands in a town which was reconstructed after the First World War as part of a vast, innovative architectural project. A new town, it appears airy and has a wonderful architectural unity, whilst old features that have been preserved, such as the cathedral, have been appropriately enhanced.
To the north of the cathedral, extending towards the neighbouring forest-covered mountains, is a sector composed of luxury villas, surrounded by gardens that sometimes resemble parklands.
This villa was constructed in this verdant district for an industrialist’s family by a regional architect in 1927. Its architectural style reflects that which was then fashionable in the Germanic world, an unpretentious, luxurious style making use of traditional Germanic characteristics.
This villa is on a somewhat triangular-shaped plot of land, spanning 2,248 m², on the corner of two streets. The villa stands on one end of the plot, with the garden sloping gently down to the street on the facade side. The property also includes a swimming pool and a garage.
The garden is planted with numerous tall trees, the foliage of which provides the villa with an almost forest-like setting.
On the west side of the property, on the other side of the street, a 390 m² plot with a small house is also included in the property.
The villaThis square building spans four levels of living space, constructed over a lower section. The third and top levels of living space are attic floors, illuminated via roof dormers on the side walls and windows set in the gable of the south facade, overlooking the garden.
The lower section, on all four sides of the villa, is composed of cement-pointed quarry stone blocks. Above, spanning the height of the first level, are red bricks, enhancing all four facades with their warm colour and creating a contrasting effect with the white-rendered upper sections of the walls.
The architecture of the facade facing the garden is particularly elegant, courtesy in part to the semi-circular bow window of the lounge on the first level, which is crowned with a flat roof forming a terrace on the second level. A large, semi-circular arched picture window, with a brick surround, is equally clearly a 1930’s architectural feature. And lastly, a window with three different sized sections opening on to the terrace on the second level, together with an oculus, and discreet half-timbering on the top level, under the rafters, also contribute to this elegance appearance.
Finally, its very steep, gable roof, with two half-hipped sections and upward-turning slopes is reminiscent of the architecture on the other side of the Vosges mountains.
Ground floor
On the west facade, a small canopy shelters the entrance to a large vestibule. Featuring a terrazzo floor bordered with mosaic edging, it provides access to all the rooms on this lower level. The floor surface area of a large, square lounge is extended by a projection created by the bow window on the south facade. Polygonal in …
