You enter the property from the street via a double-leaf metal gate decorated with diamond and spiral motifs and framed between two stone pillars. This gate leads straight from the street into a paved courtyard surrounded by an outer wall and the main edifice, which forms a U shape that opens up on its east side and is extended on its rear side with a wing and a ground-floor room by the garden. The elegant elevations are all made of dressed stone, beneath hipped and gable roofs of terracotta monk-and-nun tiling. The street runs along the front of the property, its east side, where a garage lies in an extension adjoining the south wing. Each wing on this side has one bay, but the facade is divided into three bays with two floors and a central entrance door. This main door is framed between two pilasters rising up to ionic capitals that are decorated with finely carved garlands and crowned with a sumptuous entablature with a foliage motif. On the first floor, mascarons feature at the top of the window surrounds are stone cherub heads support some of the window ledges. The windows are fitted with louvred shutters painted grey. A garden lies on the property’s west side, behind the house. It is demarcated by an L shape formed by the edifice’s rear elevations and it looks down at a neighbouring alley, which you can reach via a flight of steps that lead down to a discreet pedestrian gate. Here, the main rear elevation has two sections: one divided into three bays with three floors and small windows immediately below the eaves and another divided into three bays with two floors and, at one end of it, a door leading out onto a terrace. The south-facing elevation of the rear wing is less sumptuous that the other elevations. It is made of exposed rubble stone and has three bays with three floors. Manor Dompierre-sur-Charente (17)
A rich history and an incredible charm for this logis whose origins date back to the 15th century. The manor, rebuilt in the 18th century with 'pierre de taille’, the hand carved limestone, typical to the region, is flanked by a 16th-century castle tower and overlooks the imposing inner courtyard and the former cognac distillery with outbuildings converted into comfortable gites and a wellness centre. The main house was very tastefully decorated and offers about 600m² of living space, including 8 spacious bedrooms and 6 ensuite bathrooms with 2 dressings, a library, an equipped kitchen and several lounges and reception rooms. One of the dining rooms, which still dates back to the early days of the logis, might even have had Henri IV visiting it...It goes without saying that the history of this property and the many authentic elements, such as the wooden floors and beams and the beautiful fireplaces, which can be found throughout the manor house, immediately catapult you, with a little imagination, back several hundred years. Where the 'eau de vie' once ripened, today we find 4 furnished gites, each with its own fully equipped kitchen and living space and a total of 9 bedrooms. Guests who come to enjoy a relaxing holiday at the logis will not be short of things to do, as there is not only an outdoor swimming pool but also a spa with jacuzzi, hammam, relaxation and massage room, indoor swimming pool, gym and billiard room with bar. Several outbuildings and garages provide space for a vintage car collection, for the enthusiasts or additional possibilities towards further expansion. The estate covers almost 3 ha and is located in a small village equidistant (15 km) between Saintes, the Roman market town and the world-famous city of Cognac. The Charente River, which François I considered the most beautiful river of his kingdom, runs just two hundred metres from the estate and was once one of the country's busiest waterways via which the illustrious Gabariers transported their cognac towards the Atlantic. Come and discover this wonderful piece of history today!
