A fortified watermill with a 12th-century tower, nestled in the River Tolzac valley in France’s Lot-et-Garonne department. From the road, the edifice’s gable end can be seen emerging ever so slightly from the thick vegetation around it. But to properly admire the architecture of this beautiful watermill, its medieval tower and its adjoining annexe, you have to leave the road, drive along a river with a strip of lawn on your other side, then park in a gravelled space. At first glance, you see an intriguing mix of structures made of pointed rubble stone and brick with many windows, beneath roofs of monk-and-nun tiling. The river flows through two stone arches that support the watermill from underneath. Behind, a square tower crowned with a pyramidal roof of flat tiles overlooks the whole complex. The access road, ending in a dead end, separates the truffle woods and the horse enclosures. Further on is a tennis court set, on a slightly lower level, between shrubberies and vegetation; then a strip of land laid to lawn marks a last breath of air before starting down the gentle slope towards the entrance at the foot of the buildings.

A 13th-century Gascon chateau, redesigned in the 16th century, in 7 5 hectares of grounds with an orangery and a dovecote, nestled in France's Nouvelle-Aquitaine region. Continuing on, a massive oak door forms the service entry. The main entrance follows in the form of a carved oak double door with a glazed transom. The gable roof is clad with Roman tiles. To the rear, there is an outbuilding set at right-angles to the main house, protecting it from noise pollution and prying eyes. The dwelling not only forms part of the local history of the 18th century, it is also the birthplace of the artist Raoul Dastrac, a post-impressionist painter from the first half of the 20th century who was born and died in Aiguillon. After his training with Laurens and Dechenaud in Paris, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français and the Salon d'Automne from 1922 onwards. A painter of local life, he set up his easel in Cahors and Avignon, in Italy and in the United States. As he was also an art connoisseur, his own canvases and other collections were displayed in his residence during the latter part of his life.
