A 15th & 16th century manor house and its outbuildings in parklands, spanning almost a hectare, to the north of Rennes in the French department of Ille-et-Vilaine.
This property is about 30 minutes from Rennes. Combourg, a small character town, is 10 or so kilometres away. Saint-Malo and the Emerald Coast can be reached in 40 minutes. Near to a town with approx. 2,500 inhabitants, shops, local amenities, primary schools and an SNCF train station with 15-minute links to Rennes and putting Paris less than 2 hours away. Vast forest estates are dotted throughout the surrounding countryside. The area includes several stately homes, bearing witness to a rich past. Rural housing, constructed from a locally mined granite, is also given pride of place. The combined presence of this traditional local heritage, still well preserved, of marked reliefs and of numerous streams explains the designation of this landscape as “Romantic Brittany”.
A lane, off a little country road, runs for more than 500 metres between thick hedges and cultivated plots.
All the buildings such as the manor house, an old bakehouse and a vast barn, can be glimpsed through the extensive tree foliage from the entrance to the property.
Built on the site of an old feudal motte, by the side of a little stream which provided a natural defence, the current house stands in the centre of its parklands.
The manor houseLaid out in an L-shape, this manor house is constructed from granite and topped with a slate roof. Its spans approx. 460 m² of living space. Although the large stairway tower, partially incorporated into the carcass of the east facade, bears witness to a first fortified building, the house probably underwent major remodelling works between the 15th and the 16th century. The west, dressed stone facade features a door enhanced with flamboyant decoration. Its ogee lintel is topped with a pinnacle. The ogee moulding is adorned with typical little sculpted balls representing the buboes of the plague. Locally, these symbolic, decorative features were meant to keep the epidemic at bay.
Ground floor
The main door, on the courtyard side, provides access to a large living room, spanning approx. 120 m², with two fireplaces. Under a French ceiling featuring exposed, moulded beams and joists, this vast living room faces east and west. A glazed door opens into the garden. A monumental granite fireplace comprises sculpted jambs and a lintel mantel under a relieving arch. On one side is a door to the stairway tower, whilst that on the other side leads to a fitted kitchen, opening into the courtyard. It is followed by a laundry room, with a separate toilet. The house can equally be entered via a vestibule, giving access to a storeroom and a little lounge. The latter communicates with the large living room.
First floor
A spiral, granite stairway leads to the first floor, providing successive access as it goes up to a first bedroom, with a bathroom and toilet, as well as a second and a third bedroom. These two adjoining rooms share a large bathroom, with a toilet. A wooden stairway in the little lounge on the ground floor goes up to a landing. Laid out on either side of said landing are two bedrooms, a bathroom and a toilet. The floors upstairs are laid with natural, plaited sisal matting.
The spiral stairway continues up to two attics, one of which could be converted. A third attic, reached via a trapdoor set in the ceiling, cannot be converted, but features an outstanding 15th century roofing framework. The latter could be enhanced as part of a project to remodel the rooms on the first floor. The outbuildingsAn old bakehouse and a building used for garage and storage purposes are constructed from stone and topped with slate roofs.
