An elegant, 18th century manor house and its gardens in the Loire Valley near to Saumur.
This manor house is in a village, with all shops and amenities, in the Loire Valley near to Saumur. The towns of Angers and Tours are respectively 45 and 55 minutes away. Saumur train station provides links to both these towns which are on the TGV train line (about ten daily return journeys between Angers and Paris taking 90 minutes and between Tours and Paris taking an hour). A slip road for the A85 motorway is 10 minutes away.
A lane, leading to the entrance gates, is reached off one side of a country road which runs alongside the property. Said gates open on to a first enclosed garden and the driveway leading straight on to the manor house. The caretaker’s cottage stands in the east corner. Behind the manor house, a second garden is extended by a wooded section. The lane goes around the caretaker’s cottage to a carpark, a covered area and a large meadow that borders the manor house and its gardens on two other sides.
The manor houseThis manor house, built of freestone in the first half of the 18th century, is composed of a central building flanked, on either side, by two symmetrical pavilions. The latter are then extended by buildings that protrude slightly on the main facade. The manor house spans a ground and a first floor. It has slate roofs, with roof dormers in the Mansard style central section.
Ground floor
The entrance hall, set in the middle of the front facade, opens, on one side, into a lounge and, on the other, into a hall area leading to bedrooms. The lounge features a freestone fireplace, a French ceiling and terracotta floor tiles. It communicates with a dining room-kitchen which precedes a back kitchen, providing access to a linen room, a toilet, a shower room and two storage rooms, one of which houses the machinery for the swimming pool. The dining room features a freestone fireplace, a French ceiling as well as terracotta floor tiles and leads directly out into the gardens at the front and the back of the manor house. A corridor leads to two bedrooms, both then communicating with a third bedroom, as well as to a bathroom, with an Italian shower, and a separate toilet. All three bedrooms have French ceilings and terracotta floor tiles but only one has a freestone fireplace. The through entrance hall also includes a quarter-turning, stone stairway.
First floor
The first floor landing leads, on one side, to a billiards’ room and, on the other, to a hall area and lastly to a bathroom. The billiards’ room, with its 5 m high ridge and exposed roofing framework beams, provides access to a bedroom, with a bathroom and a toilet. The walls and ceiling in this bedroom are adorned with stencilled garlands of flowers. The hall area leads to a first bedroom, a bathroom with a toilet and a second bedroom. Both bedrooms feature French ceilings and terracotta floor tiles. The second one also has a fireplace with a wooden mantel and cupboards. The caretaker’s cottageSpanning a floor surface area of approx. 150 m², this cottage houses three flats:
- a first, upstairs flat, with an open-plan kitchen adjoining a lounge-dining room, a bedroom and a shower room with a toilet. The living room has terracotta floor tiles. This flat is accessed via an outside stairway reached from the lane.
- a second, ground floor flat, with a kitchen-dining room, a lounge, with a freestone fireplace, a toilet, a bedroom and a bathroom with a toilet. This flat can be reached from the garden laid out in front of the manor house.
- and a third, 2-storey flat, with an open-plan kitchen adjoining a lounge-dining room on the ground floor, and a bedroom as well as a bathroom with a toilet, upstairs. This flat has a small courtyard terrace …
