A 19th century chateau in 5 ha of parklands, less than 3 hours from Paris and near to the beaches on the Cotentin Peninsula.
This property stands near to Valognes, known as the “Norman Versailles”, famous for its mansion houses. It is less than 3 hours from Paris by road or train. The nearest beaches are some 12 km away, whilst the train station and shops are but a few minutes away.
A driveway leads off of the road, bordered by tall trees, to the chateau. Standing in its parklands of more than 5 ha, this chateau features architecture characterised by its simplicity and its balance: a hip roof, four chimney stacks, a slightly rectangular layout, two porches, one at the front and one at the back, symmetrical openings on all floors as well as completely aligned lintels and quoins. The only thing that appears to disturb the perfect symmetry is the large conservatory adjoining the west facade. Apart from their rectilinear row of fruit trees, the landscaped parklands feature various copses of trees, many of which are hundreds of years old, as well as flower and mixed beds, all of which enhance the precision of the property and make it harmonious.
The chateauKnown by the local inhabitants as “the chateau”, this modestly-sized house is more of a country home. It spans three levels, in addition to that of the semi-underground cellars, illuminated via basement windows. The front and rear facades are composed of five bays, whilst the other two facades have four. The large openings are flanked by bluish-grey slatted shutters. The main, south-facing facade features a porch, topped on the first floor with a balcony, protected by wrought iron railings, and on the top floor by an impressive gable-fronted roof dormer, with geminated windows and three semi-circular arches. It is flanked by four bull’s eye windows. Adjoining the west facade, a large greenhouse, communicating with the kitchen and the corridor on the ground floor, is particularly popular mid-season. The slate roof is enhanced with wrought ridge tiles, finials and weathervanes.
Ground floor
A porch provides access to the double, glazed entrance doors, topped with a fanlight. The entrance hall, paved with black and white floor tiles laid in a chessboard pattern, leads, on one side, to a dining room and, on the other, to a lounge. The rooms, illuminated by large openings, are very bright. A corridor leading to the rear gives access to a small lounge, a study, a laundry room, a fitted kitchen, with a fireplace, a toilet, the door to the cellars as well as to the large stairway going up to the other floors. All the reception rooms have strip pattern parquet flooring, laid diagonally, and walls lined with wainscoting. The dining room has a black marble fireplace and the lounge a pink veined marble fireplace. Ceiling moulding, roses and cornices as well as the woodwork and parquet floors are in an excellent state of repair. The stairway, with a wrought handrail, is illuminated via a stained-glass window, typical of the Art Nouveau style. An additional feature of this house is the presence of a large, adjoining greenhouse, directly accessed via the kitchen or via a door off the central corridor.
First floor
This level comprises five bedrooms, a bathroom and a separate toilet, as well as several shower room and toilets. The bedrooms are illuminated via two or three windows and three of them are enhanced with fireplaces.
Second floor
This level is taken up by a large attic, illuminated via four bull’s eye windows. Two small staff bedrooms have been converted here. The height under the roofing framework would make it possible to convert this area.
Cellar
The cellars are laid out under the full ground surface area of the house. Reached via a stairway near to the kitchen and illuminated via numerous basement windows, they house a …
