An 18th century manor house, surrounded by an enclosed garden, near to Coutances and the beaches on the Cotentin peninsula.
This manor house stands between land and sea in a commune surrounded by bocage countryside, just a few kilometres from Agon-Coutainville and its beaches. Protected by high walls, it is in the immediate proximity of the village church. Coutances train station is just a few kilometres away and Paris 3½ hours away.
Carriage and pedestrian gateways, set in high walls supported by buttresses, open on to a courtyard and a circular driveway running alongside three buildings. On one side, bordered by the street, a long outbuilding, with a tile roof, is used as additional living space. Opposite, a second outbuilding, with a slate roof, comprises two garages. The Presbyterian manor house, constructed in the second half of the 18th century, separates them. The garden, spanning a surface area of approx. 5,000 m², extends behind the manor house.
The manor houseThis manor house spans three levels and five bays. A central, triangular pediment features a bull’s eye window. Constructed from stone, it is topped with a steep, slate, gable roof, dotted with four impressive chimney stacks.
Ground floor
The front door is topped with a fanlight, glazed with small panes. It opens into a hall, paved with old terracotta tiles and housing a wide wooden stairway. Said hall provides access, on one side, to a lounge, followed by a study. On the other side are a dining room and a kitchen, with an adjoining laundry room. All the rooms are illuminated via tall windows. The floors are covered with red and yellow marble, old square terracotta tiles or strip pattern parquet flooring. The lounge has a white marble, Louis XV style fireplace, whilst the dining room features a monumental granite fireplace. Beams and joists are very often exposed. A glazed door in the study opens on to the outside, whilst a door in the kitchen leads to the back garden.
First floor
A door on a half-landing opens on to the garden behind the house. The first floor has parquet flooring throughout. Its landing provides access, across from the stairway, to a study and, on either side, to a large bedroom, with a fireplace and illuminated via two windows, as well as to a bathroom, followed by a small bedroom.
Second floor
The layout on this level is very similar to that of the first floor: straight on, a small bedroom, illuminated via a bull’s eye window and, on either side, two bedrooms, with sloping ceilings, and a shower room. The bedrooms are illuminated by windows or roof dormers and some have a separate toilet.
Accessed via a French window off the entrance courtyard, this building comprises large storage areas as well as a flat. The ground floor is composed of a laundry room, a toilet, a storeroom and a living room with an open-plan kitchen. Three windows look out over the village. Upstairs are two bedrooms and a bathroom, with a toilet. A door opens on to the street, making it possible for this flat to be totally independent.
The second outbuilding, with its slate roof, comprises two separate garages as well as a storeroom, said to be the starting point for an underground tunnel. Upstairs, and reached via an outside stone stairway, a large room is in use as a games room. Water supply and mains drainage pipes nearby make it possible to envisage numerous conversion projects.
The garden is divided into three sections, bordered by high walls, and spans a total surface area of approx. 5,000 m². The first constitutes the entrance courtyard, with a circular driveway and a copse of shrubs. The second, behind the house, comprises a large lawn, with superb trees as well as a few fruit trees and flower beds. The third, between the manor house and the church, is a large, …
