Two hours from Paris, an elegant Renaissance manor house, overlooked by an imposing 18th century Royal Forge.
The historic hamlet comprising a manor house, several outbuildings and a royal forge lies just a few kilometres from a medieval town and an SNCF train station with direct link to Paris-Bercy. The property is close to a small town with all amenities, on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The village was built around a famous priory founded in the 11th century by the Cluniac Order. Not far from the estate are the Royal Forges of Guérigny, witnesses to the area's rich industrial past, as well as one of the richest forests in Europe, most famous for its many surprisingly well-preserved centuries-old oaks.
After crossing part of the oak forest and passing fountains that still refresh pilgrims today, a well-maintained country lane leads to the property. The view opens onto large buildings which call to mind the forest's ironworking past. A gravel drive offers parking in front of the stables which date back to the golden age of the property. A greenhouse is located next to an elegant guesthouse. Quite remarkable rare and majestic trees, such as ginkgo biloba, purple beeches or a white magnolia, create a stunning backdrop for the Renaissance manor house which stands in front of a landscaped park with a well-stocked fishing stream. A little further on stand two intriguing small hills covered with shiny or matt black pebbles. The blast furnace, an imposing ruin, and the original water tower with its gushing water spouts emerge from the top of these mounds. Contemporary works of art placed here and there bring us back to the present. A long old building houses a large reception hall. This is, followed by another building, currently housing a restaurant. Magnificent vegetation throughout the property creates a delicate harmony. Tree huts, an old bread oven turned into a house and the restored caretaker's cottage give the place a certain originality.
The manorThe elegant architecture is sober and pure. The manor house is flanked by two towers with mullioned windows. The first part of the building is made of ochre-coloured limestone, which brings out the whiteness of the massive stone lintels and the chain-bonded window pillars. The gable roof is decorated with flat, handcrafted Burgundian tiles. Between the two towers, the central building is flanked by a conservatory. The second tower has a slate roof and corner links.
Ground floor
A spacious entrance hall opens onto a landing paved with black and white checkerboard pattern with a decorative border. The walls are of unfinished large blocks of stone, remnants of the manor’s past. This ornamental mosaic floor leads to a very luminous dining room which opens onto a fully glazed conservatory, with views over the park and the Royal Forge. The room features a recess, cupboards decorated with mouldings and a central ceiling rose. Interior shutters flank the high French windows. A fully equipped kitchen opens onto the dining room. A double door leads to a first bedroom with an open marble fireplace. A large window overlooks the park. The flooring is old oak parquet. The adjoining bedroom comes with an immaculate white bathroom, fully tiled. In the Renaissance tower, a staircase leads to the other bedrooms. The lower steps are in wood, the upper steps in Burgundy stone. A rose motif decor in a patinated ochre tone has been restored by a former student of the Florence School.
First floor
The first floor features three spacious and bright bedrooms. The old oak or cherrywoood parquet floors have been restored. The sobriety of the furniture and the floral fabrics underline the soft colours of the predominantly off-white and beige decoration. Each room has its own bathroom with white linen, just as in the old times. Most rooms
