Amidst the hills in the middle of the French department of Var, a renovated, 17th century, traditional Mas house near a hamlet.
A vine-growing region in the middle of the French department of Var, at the foot of the Loube mountain range, a protected site, and near to an authentic Provencal hamlet with exposed stone houses. It was in this haven of peace that Frédéric-Mistral came to write, in front of the chapel.
Marignane airport is an hour away, that of Hyères 45 minutes. Toulon TGV train station is 40 minutes away and that of Aix-en-Provence 55 minutes. The motorway can be reached in 25 minutes, as can Brignoles with all of its shops. A supermarket is 10 minutes away and small local shops in the village just 5 minutes. Tennis courts are nearby.
The grounds, spanning approx. 1,800 m² around this unoverlooked house, are planted with old trees, including a magnificent plane and cypress trees. It is superbly set out with a section laid to lawn in front of the house and, at a distance, a swimming pool area with a pool-house. This property has direct access to the hillside and its hiking trails via a little, rounded wicket gate leading to an old wayside cross. This authentic Mas house has been restored in keeping with Provencal tradition. The facade of the west section features exposed stone, the other rendered section was recently restored in a matching colour.
The traditional Mas houseSpanning approx. 350 m² of living space, three rooms on the west side could become independent. The house is entered via the south facade, overlooking a gravel terrace with an arbour, shaded by a plane tree.
The ground floor comprises an entrance hall, providing access to a small study, lined with old, glazed vat tiles. A lounge, a kitchen with 2 sinks and a barbecue, a dining room and a laundry room complete this level. Old terracotta floor tiles and exposed beams are to be found throughout the house.
Three stairways, with terracotta tile steps and wooden nosing, lead upstairs. An outside door, on the east side of the building, opens on to a stairway that leads to a bedroom and its bathroom, with a toilet. Another stairway goes up from the lounge also to a bedroom with a bathroom and toilet. A flight of stairs goes up from the main entrance to a little lounge-bedroom, with a fireplace and old, brightly coloured vat tiles surrounding a stone sink. This level also comprises a lounge-library, with a fireplace and an old stone sink in a cupboard, a dressing room and a bedroom, with a bathroom and shower as well as a toilet.
A stairway goes up from the lounge-library to two bedrooms, two bathrooms, one of which has a toilet, and a dressing room.The self-contained sectionAn entrance door on the west side of the building opens into a self-contained area comprising a kitchen, a vaulted cellar, a lounge, a shower room with toilet and, upstairs, a bedroom with a toilet. This separate entrance can also communicate with the main section of the Mas via the dining room.The gardenA space on the south side, forming an outside living area, still has an old wash-house, an old ornamental pool with aquatic plants and fish, as well as fruit trees (kaki, kiwi, pomegranate, quince, grape, olive, fig, cherry and walnut trees). On the west side, a 13x6 m swimming pool is enhanced with a pergola, a fountain, a pool-house and a barbecue. The entrance gates, a carport, with a closed section used for storage purposes, as well as a French bowls pitch are all on the north side. Another set of remote-controlled gates also provide entrance to the property.
