An old 16th century mill, in an enchanting spot, with an island between rivers and parkland 25 km from Tours, and with full water rights.
Not far from the confluence of the Loire and Indre rivers, to the east of the Loire-Anjou-Touraine Regional Nature Park stretches an array of wild and magnificent landscapes. Land of inspiration for many writers where both well-known castles and smaller heritage sites are found next to each other. Less than 30 min from Tours, a few villages and just outside a small town.
By a river, in quiet surroundings, at a turn in the path leaving a small country road.
An automatic gate opens on to a courtyard, surrounded by numerous buildings, with a garden and access to the mill.
A natural setting for this unique site lulled by the flow of water.
It is also home to a sometimes poorly known but much appreciated winegrowing industry.
The mill is referred to in texts dating back to the early 16th century and has rarely changed family. At the end of 1930s, the mill belonged to the father of the current owner. The milling activity ended just before the father acquired the property.
The mill, with full French ownership rights, comprises both a flour mill and a tannin mill. The first one was used to grind cereals, into a coarse powder or flour. The second was used to crush the bark of oak or chestnut trees into powder and extract the tannin for use in the tanning industry. The grinding mechanism is still in place as is the floodgate system, the walkways, bridges and spillways.
Eel fishing, an important source of income for the miller was carried out using different types of methods, using wicker baskets and fish chests that are still in place.
The site has undergone some changes, is now remarkably well maintained, and in overall good condition. The property has kept its authenticity.
Near the entrance, there are: the outbuildings, the miller’s old house, now a home and a stable, barn, workshop, old tannin mill, an old trough, and troglodytic caves, with bread oven and wine cellar. Another lovely feature of this property is the rich vegetation on both sides of the river. Grass, bushes and shrubs, flower beds, a beautiful selection of trees of a variety of species, crystal clear waters, frogs, dragon flies and trout, all signs of the well-preserved nature.
The confluence is a beautiful fishing area.
It is surrounded by rural and forested landscapes, woods and pastureland; it is a place where one is seduced by beauty and authenticity.
The millIt is no doubt one of the oldest buildings in the area. The facades are both east and west facing.
Built of stone, the building is a two-storey vessel overlooking the river with a projection extending the property to overhang the water.
The 25m2 entrance is spacious and spectacular and features all of the flour mill mechanism.
It also incorporates a storage room, cloakroom, a toilet and a staircase leading to the upper floors.
Five large picture windows with double and triple glazing, reveal the surrounding landscapes.
Each room is a real observatory for the surrounding parkland and river.
Such a location is delightful and rare; a place to discover and observe all these beautiful natural features.
