An old, 17th century mill, alongside a river abounding in fish, in the Sologne countryside, 1½ hours from Paris, in the Centre-Val-de-Loire region.
This property is set in the midst of a little town surrounded by countryside. The centre of town, with all shops needed on a daily basis and all schools, is within walking distance. An SCNF train station provides 1⅔-hour links to Paris-Bercy. A character town, where a wealth of preserved historic heritage includes a canal bridge constructed by the Eiffel company in the 19th century, a Romano-Byzantine style church, classified on the French Supplementary Historic Monument List, as well as a museum, tracing the history of mosaics and enamels. A place where it is pleasant to stroll around the marina, with its somewhat coastal air.
A gateway opens on to a gravelled area used for parking cars. The view looks out over a garden, dotted with various species of trees. The house is enhanced by the omnipresence of water in the form of the river and the canal. This driving force of the mill is transformed into a rotary movement by the paddlewheel which comes into immediate view. It is, of course, constructed from wood and is made impressive by its size. It can be seen from the little bridge that faces the building. A south-facing, tiled terrace looks out from the house over the property’s old barn.
The millWith very sober architecture, its quarry stone block walls enhance the numerous openings that let copious amounts of light flood into the interior. Its four floors comprise an impressive facade which is reflected in the river water. The openings are marked by brick jambs. The red-coloured framing surrounding the main entrance features a stone lintel. The openings set in the middle of the building provide the contour and profile with a different colouring. The facade on the lock side differs in that its roof, slightly lower in relation to the central building, features roof dormers.
Ground floor
The main door opens into a fully fitted kitchen, with an eating area, where Italian stone floor tiles enhance the colour of the beams. The meticulous decoration includes horizontal motifs made from the region’s pink brick. A different coloured stone mosaic, framed with a surround made of small, Bordeaux red bricks, enhances an old sink. The windows illuminate an exposed stone wall. It is followed by a spacious bedroom, with an adjoining shower room, which has been brought in line with current day standards. A semi-circular archway precedes a flight of seven stone steps which leads to a lounge with numerous openings. This room also houses an industrial stairway, with eight steps, leading to a half-floor. A bedroom looks out over the millrace. Natural light enhances its exposed stone walls, the sections of roofing framework and its assemblies such as the horizontal framing and the gussets. On the other side, a second, very large, bright bedroom, with an adjoining shower room, looks out over the river and the canal. The railings are wrought.
This level comprises another two bedrooms, each with a walk-in shower room and toilet. One looks out over the water, the other the parklands.
A wide opening overlooks the mill’s wheel. A large room could become a second lounge or a children’s games room. It is adjoined by a laundry room and a linen room.
