When this house was built as a wedding present in the late 18th century the builder could not have known it would still have the same power to charm over 200 years later.
A long private drive past high trees and flowering bushes ends leads to the designated parking area at the beginning of the garden. From here you can clearly see the layout of the property: A substantial stone house with a large covered terrace leading to the swimming pool and BBQ area and framed by fruit trees and a thick hedge.
As you walk up the drive, on the left is a small tower (pigeonnier) converted to a guest cottage. Built in the local stone, the renovation has carefully preserved the original walls, tiled floor and exposed beams of this traditional structure. On the ground floor there is a small living space and shower room. A modern staircase winds up to a living room and then continues to the 2nd floor which consists of a double bedroom with a high ceiling showcasing the intricate beams under the roof. This is a charming space, ideal for an older teenager or visiting friends.
The main house now lies before you.
As you walk up the steps to the front door you can see two stone hearts set in the walls, one on each side of the door, to represent the bride and groom who received this house as a wedding present in 1789 according to the stone inscription set into the lintel.
The front door opens onto a wide tiled hall that extends all the way to the back, with a door opening onto the garden at the far end. Immediately on your right you enter a large bedroom with en suite shower room and dressing area. The main feature of this room is the large fireplace, now blocked, that currently serves as a decorative element but could be brought back into use.
To the left of the front door is the large kitchen which features a traditional range, a large open fireplace and an original stone sink. This lovely room really is the heart of the house and is a clear indicator of the charm and quirky décor elements that will be found throughout the house.
On the same side of the hallway as the kitchen there are two further spacious bedrooms, each with original tiled floors and exposed beams. Facing them, a large cloakroom and a big built-in closet for coats and boots.
The hall opens out here on the right and behind the cloakroom there is a large bathroom with shower and a decent-sized laundry room.
A door leads through to the renovated barn extension - this two-story structure was originally a hay barn but has been beautifully renovated and now comprises a large sitting room with an open fireplace and stairs leading to a mezzanine. This is an ideal place to set up a home office although it could also be used for a further bedroom if needed.
The boiler room is also located here.
A staircase next to the laundry room leads to the first floor where the owners have built two further bedrooms into the eaves. These are both large rooms with sloping ceilings, exposed beams and skylights. A large shower room and separate WC are provided and there is also a storage room and access to the crawl space.
Outside, the gardens are of a manageable size and there is plenty of room for gardening. The owners have installed raised beds for tomatoes and herbs, tubs of flowers everywhere and a charming petanque playing area under the palm trees.
Here at Bliss
We could spend days sitting on that shady terrace, preparing meals in the summer kitchen, eating, talking, reading or just having a siesta after a swim in the pool. It truly is the ideal place for long family dinners, for leisurely breakfasts, to sit and play chess or just to relax.
We would put a small kitchen in the ground floor of the guest cottage to make it totally autonomous.
While the décor of the main house is quite attractive as it is, it could easily be aligned with contemporary taste by replacing the colour scheme.
