The splendour of a Renaissance castle, Touraine

The splendour of a Renaissance castle

The castle of Bussières, built in 1234 and refurbished during teh Renaissance, provides more than 1,000 sq m of living space

At the heart of a 30-ha park, the castle of Bussière was built in the 12th and 13th centuries, and slightly rearranged in the 16th and 17th centuries. Absolutely quiet, the 1,100- sq m property is listed in France's Inventory of Historical Monuments. Featuring vintage elements (slate roof, spiral staircase, oak-beamed ceilings, Versailles flooring, mullions), “the castle has retained traces of the 1300s, with machicolation and chemins de ronde” the owner stresses. The main building is flanked by two towers and features three archways. The west wing houses a vast study, while the ground floor features six reception rooms, a big kitchen with an old stove, a pantry, a hunting room and a dining room. The former chapel was refurbished into a white stone central staircase. Eight spacious bedrooms, including the separate King's bedroom, round out the floor. “Lit at night, the park features a pond, an outdoor pool, a tennis and a palm grove,” the Mercure agency says. The outbuildings include stalls, a saddlery, a grooming area and a 200-sq m 18th century farm.
