Mallet-Stevens, a contemporary classic

Mallet-Stevens, a contemporary classic

A 6-m wide clearance

Located on the ground floor of sculptors Jan and Joël Martel’s private mansion, in the Auteuil district, this splendid workshop was designed by Robert Mallet- Stevens. Built in 1927, it has since become part of France’s Monuments historiques inventory. Large glass walls brighten the 171-sq m, wide-clearance space (6 m), a testimont to Robert Mallet-Stevens ingeniousness: varied scales and atmosphere, remarkable acoustics, a big sliding door. “The deliberately subtle contemporary design gives the place a warm touch: besides the main workshop/large and bright living room, a bedroom with zenithal lighting is located on the mezzanine. A Boffi kitchen occupies the former winter garden, while the old lower workshop now houses a bathroom and a dressing,” Architecture de Collection says.
