Castle Limoges (87)

A medieval castle with its keep, ramparts and 2 hectares of terraced grounds, overlooking a village and the Tardoire valley, 35 minutes south-west of Limoges. A bird's eye view of the ancient ramparts, in the shape of a polygon, reveals the double enclosure and the monumental dimensions of the impressive castle built on the site of earlier strongholds towards the middle of the 11th century. A number of medieval features have survived to the present day, in particular the corner tower of the main building and the keep in the centre of the courtyard, which rises to a height of 25 m and can be sighted from a distance of several kilometres. In the 17th century, a manor house was added as an extension to the medieval dwelling, probably on its former foundations, providing the estate with a pleasant residence at a human scale. Outbuildings and the remains of a castle chapel, set in terraced grounds and enclosed by circular ramparts, complete the impressive complex of buildings standing over the surrounding area. The entire keep and the corner tower are classified as national historical monuments. The facades and roofs of the medieval dwelling adjoining the tower, as well as those of the 17th-century building, are also listed. The sober facades of the various buildings are mostly of rough-hewn stone, those of the 17th-century dwelling of rendered stone, with straight or arched openings, evenly spaced or not, featuring small-paned glass doors, windows and transoms. Shutters protect all the openings, those of the most recent building are painted white. The roofs, with two or four pitches, are of flat or monk-and-nun tiles.

The Citadel, the only feudal fortification in perfect condition in the Haute-Provence region, is defended by a double helical enclosure, the first of which forms a wall of more than 36 ft. Castle Vitteaux (21)

A 15th-century medieval chateau and its farm complex to be restored, nestled in the Auxois province of Burgundy. The chateau was built in 1461 at one end of a village nestled in a small valley of a tributary of the River Brenne. The edifice was designed in line with the principles of medieval architecture. It forms a quadrangle, fortified on its east side by two round towers and on its west side by two square towers. The main building and farm complex used to form a closed courtyard, which is today open on its south side. The main dwelling is framed between imposing round defensive towers that have two floors. The highest roof, which was probably once a cone, has been turned into a gabled roof with two gable walls added. There is an arched carriage entrance in the middle of the facade. It is framed between two pilasters. Above it are the two slots of a drawbridge that used to cross a moat, which is now earth-filled. There are also two pavilions at each end of the edifice. The round towers are punctuated with arrow slits on the ground floor and first floor and with rectangular windows with ogee-arch lintels. On the west side, the bases of the two square towers that defend the farm complex follow the slope of the land and have stringcourses marking the top of the slope. They also have arrow slits, like the other towers. Barns close the north and west sides of the complex. Lastly, there are vast cellars. They house a remarkable well with sculpted faces. This well still contains water. It was a vital requirement during sieges.

Castle Lyon 1er (69)

A magnificent Italian-style chateau built in 1877 with splendid grounds, nestled in the town of Écully in Greater Lyon. The chateau was built in 1877. Beyond a long wall, it comes into view as soon as you step through the property’s imposing entrance gate. The whole edifice is built of dressed stone. It is a replica of a Florentine villa in a Palladian style that bears all the traits of Vitruvian architecture – a building based on the golden ratio with three essential qualities: strength, usefulness and beauty. The number seven is represented in the number of rooms and windows and even in the garden where there are seven topiary shrubs. The chateau is square in shape and faces south. It is crowned with a flat roof. Its horizontal lines combine subtly with the verticality of its columns and tall Renaissance-style windows capped with triangular pediments. The building has a garden level, a raised ground floor, a first floor and a second floor. On both the facade and the rear elevation, a double flight of stone steps with two quarter turns and finely carved pear balusters lead up into the raised ground floor: on the north side, the steps take you to an entrance hall and on the south side the steps take you to a vast lounge with large windows at the end of a long gallery. You can also reach the interior via other entrances on each side and you can drive straight up to the foot of the chateau’s front steps. On the garden side, a flight of steps takes you down beyond the topiary shrubs to a vast lawn. The edifice is surrounded by its lush grounds. Its east side is edged with leafy trees that provide shade and coolness. Furthermore, its gallery with imposing columns protects the dwelling from the sun too. On the west side, woods make the property cosy. And in the garden, at the bottom of its steps, there is a large oval pond. Beyond this ornamental pond, your gaze is drawn to the splendid vista of greenery and open space that the garden offers.

Castle Chateauroux (36)

A 19th-century chateau with outhouses, a chapel and a lake, nestled in 30 hectares of grounds in the south of France’s Touraine province. The seigneurial home that was built here on the ruins of a medieval mansion, of which no vestiges remain, was endlessly redesigned until it collapsed in 1860. In 1890, the decision was made to rebuild the edifice on the site. A renowned architect, Louis-Alfred Trolliet, a specialist in the reconstruction of chateaux, was entrusted with this task. He was responsible for the edifice you can see here today. Trolliet was nicknamed ‘the Viollet-le-Duc of the Berry province’ in a nod to the famous 19th-century French architect Eugène Emmanuel Viollet-le-Duc who restored many medieval monuments. Trolliet won his spurs as a leading figure of the Troubadour style in French architecture with his restoration of the Château de Romefort in the town of Ciron. To rebuild the present property, he did not adopt the Troubadour style but rather the style of the Loire Valley chateaux that was also in vogue at the time. Trolliet opted for a long rectangular dwelling crowned with tall hipped roofs of slate tiles recalling the Château de Chenonceau and the Château d’Azay-le-Rideau. The grand edifice comes into view once you have gone through the entrance gate and made your way up the long central drive punctuated symmetrically with topiary box shrubs neatly clipped into cones. The château faces east and west. Its main section has a ground floor, a first floor and a second floor in the roof space. The adjoining square tower has a third floor in its roof space. The symmetrical elevations are rendered and punctuated with large small-paned windows fitted with wooden louvred shutters that are painted sky blue. Gabled dormers punctuate the roof of the main section and that of the square tower. Beyond the château, the drive crosses dense woodland on this estate, which covers around 30 hectares and includes a 1.2-hectare lake. Trolliet also decided to build two large lodges as foreparts of the château exactly opposite it. These two buildings are rectangular. They have a ground floor and a first floor. A third lodge stands at a right angle to one of them. This third structure has an eclectic style and recalls a train station. On the south side, a circular dovecote with a cone roof of terracotta tiles adorns the grounds. On the east side, there is a heated swimming pool. Behind the outhouses, a secondary entrance leads to a gravelled car park. Lastly, on the north-west side, there is a private lake. In the middle of this lake there is a small tree-dotted island.

This unique 17th Century Château, located at the end of its private driveway, surrounded by lush countryside, offers 550m² of accommodation, along with rustic French barns and a substantial loft space which could all be converted into more habitable space. The Château was originally built in 1680, and remained within the same French family for over 300 years. The property has been lovingly restored in recent years and benefits today from a central heating system, updated plumbing and modern electrics, along with elegantly decorated rooms. This country home is bursting with charm with its polished wood paneling, authentic oak floors, beautifully restored staircases and grand reception area. Every detail added to the property was thoughtfully put together. Even the corner stones of the main house were placed so that the building is perfectly aligned with the equinox. Having served as a family home for over 300 years, the property provides formal elegance with modern comforts. Living accommodation comprises 5 reception rooms, 8 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, 3 en-suites, a utility, and scullery. Alongside the main Château, you will find « La Pigeonnaire », a charming 2 bedroom guardian’s cottage which currently serves as an idyllic gîte for holiday makers. In addition, there is a large two-storey barn, which so far has provided the perfect area for entertaining, along with its covered dining terrace that overlooks the surrounding fields, and a 10m x 5m salt-water swimming pool. Next to the barn is a pool house with its own original bread oven. There is also an open barn that currently serves as a woodstore, and a decorative kiosk close to the vegetable garden. The grounds comprise woodland, pasture and a stunningly maintained garden with 2 spring water wells. The property is located within the commune of Sainte Colombe, a charming village with a great local school and a recently renovated tennis court. The market town of Hagetmau, known for its Olympic-sized swimming pool, is only a short drive, where you can enjoy the local markets, restaurants and bars, and a stroll through the historical centre. The area is rich in culture and history, and the market town of Saint Sever, with its UNESCO World Heritage Site Abbey, is also only a 10 minute drive. Just over an hour’s drive to the stunning Atlantic Coast, or the Pyrenees mountain range, the Château is located in one of the most sought after areas of France. The relaxed lifestyle, the accessibility to the outdoors, and the unbelievable gastronomy, make this place a real gem. The property would make the ideal family home, but also has the potential to run one to several businesses. Pau, Lourdes and Biarritz airports are also all easily accessible.

Castle Rodez (12)

A castle and its renovated medieval keep with a stunning view over the surrounding 15 ha of open countryside, on the edge of a historic village between Conques and Espalion. Built on a southern hillside, on a site that dominates the village 200 m to the east, the castle sits in the heart of nature and cannot be made out from the first buildings of the town. The narrow road leading from the valley to the property ends in front of a barn and a perimeter wall. Past a heavy wooden gate, a driveway bordered by chequered terraces leads to the castle. The land includes fields and forests with a combination of oak, chestnut, ash and walnut trees and, below the castle, old varieties of fig, apple and plum trees. Situated in an old wine-growing area, the building was once surrounded by vines: the ancient unused terraces have disappeared under the cover of the budding oak. A network of pipes linking eight cisterns, still partially accessible, ensured the collection of rainwater in winter and the irrigation of crops. At the rear of the castle, on a terrace maintained by pink sandstone supporting walls, there is a garden followed by a swimming pool. The garden consists of a parterre with four rectangular beds, punctuated with terracotta lanterns. It is accessed from the living room via a glass door. The pool, which faces the setting sun, is edged by a row of trees on the valley side. A footpath leads from the castle to the village.

About France

The Châteaux region

The Loire Valley is famous for its royal châteaux. As well as those open to the public, this area is home to many privately owned castles. Easily accessible from Paris, it's the ideal location for international buyers looking for a castle for sale in France.

Thriving businesses

Many historic French castles are converted into elegant hotels. Often located in picturesque villages or towns, visitors come from far and wide to spend a memorable French vacation, or to get married in a romantic castle wedding venue.
