Castle Coeuvres-et-Valsery (02)

Château de Coeuvres-Valsery - Meeting place of Henri IV and Gabrielle d'Estrées in 1590 - Original and dreamlike Renaissance mannerist castle, built for the Dukes of Estrées in the middle of the 16th century, completed around 1575. Henri IV met Gabrielle d'Estrées there in 1590, the date of the beginning of their romantic and tumultuous affair. 6 hectares. To be completely restored. Villers-Cotterets, Picardy, Aisne, Hauts-de-France. Although it looks like a fortress, it is a pleasure chateau, and more precisely a party castle, given the off-centre plan characterized by an off-centre and small main building, the presence of four imposing pavilions and a possible large gallery disappeared to the south-west. The ambitious Estrées family, which included a French ambassador in Rome, had a festive and worldly reputation, close to the royal family; Coeuvres-Valsery will be erected as a marquisate then as a duchy-peerage for her. Of this ambitious complex built in the second half of the 16th century, close to the royal achievements, there remain only vestiges resulting from the demolitions of the Revolution and the bombardment of 1918 while the restoration initiated at the end of the 19th century had just been completed. finish. The environment, curiously implanted on a swamp confirms a baroque choice, which can find its explanation in the mannerism, current of thought and artistic of the XVIth century having a taste for the strange, the curious, the bizarre, the original; sometimes going to extremes of incongruity and bad taste. Architecture, A square plan, marked by large dry moats spanned by bridges on two sides, confined by slightly projecting square corner pavilions. The architecture is made of beautiful limestone stonework, the walls of the moat are slightly sloped. The most remarkable element is the so-called Henri IV pavilion to the west, square in plan topped with a large four-sided roof, attached to a square stair tower topped with a dome; on the side a low wing. The windows are mullioned and transom, skylights with arched pediment. Beautiful moldings on the facades, windows with bands. Inside this pavilion, a large room adorned with a neo-Renaissance fireplace, black and white floor, ceiling with beams and joists decorated with paintings and crests, low panelling. Two other rooms. A stone spiral staircase. Upstairs, a large room without any decor, two other rooms. A great peak. On the south-east side, a superb cryptoporticus on which the wooden gallery may have stood, it includes a series of vaulted rooms, in particular the large kitchens with their superb stereotomy. Beautiful stone slab floors. A second basement level houses flooded galleries. Remains of the stairway pavilion with two semicircular bays, straight staircase with banister under a semicircular vault. To the North-East, outbuildings, largely rebuilt after the First World War, in the centre, a porch house topped with a four-sided roof, attached to a staircase turret topped with a dome. Inside, a few rare original elements, a stone spiral staircase, a neo-Renaissance fireplace. Nice volume on the first floor of the porch. Character : Gabrielle d'Estrees. Born in Coeuvres-Valsery in 1573, died in Paris in 1599. A woman with a tumultuous life, whose mother was already described as frivolous, the siblings of seven sisters were called 'the seven deadly sins' by Madame de Sévigné, the father saying that Coeuvres-Valsery was 'a hutch for whores'. The family having great social ambitions, it already cumulated important charges and functions, Gabrielle met King Henri IV at Coeuvres-Valsery in 1590, through her lover. The King courted her ardently, returning especially to Coeuvres-Valsery, after six months, she yielded. He wanted to marry her, even going so far as to announce their marriage in public at a party at the Louvre on February 23, 1599; she died shortly after April 10, 1599 while carrying the child she had had with Henry IV, certainly as a result of her pregnancy, although she showed all the signs of poisoning, which for a long time hovered over the doubt about the cause of his death. Henri IV covered the d'Estrées family with titles and offices. Gabrielle's father, Antoine d'Estrées was Governor of Ile de France, her brother François-Annibal, Bishop of Noyon, French Ambassador to Rome, her sister Abbess of Maubuisson. historical origin, - Villiers family - 1552 Purchase by Jean d'Estrées. - 1552-1575 construction work on the current castle. - 1573 Birth of Gabrielle d'Estrées in Coeuvres-Valsery. - 1575 Death of Jean d'Estrées, grandfather of Gabrielle d'Estrées. - 1590 Visit of Henri IV to Coeuvre-Valsery who meets Gabrielle d'Estrées there. - 1739, The degraded castle passes to Le Tellier. - 1793-1795 sale as national property, demolition and fragmentation of the estate - 19th century, purchase by the Berthiers de Sauvigny who carried out major restoration work at the end of the 19th century - 1918 Bombings during the Battle of the Marne. - Around 1920 restoration work in war damage. - 1953 Sale to the town of Madeleine-les-Lille, which set up a summer camp there. - 1974 Conversion into a retirement home. Castle Uzès (30)

In the enchanted land of Perrault's tales, it is not unusual to come across cats in boots, sleeping princesses, little ducks who think they are very ugly or princesses who can't stand peas... but also charming manor houses and their hosts in such a magical environment, amid exceptional landscapes - a cultural and historical interlude of the most seductive kind. A true cradle of life, the spring here gushes through vales and valleys all the way to the emblematic Pont du Gard, once supplying the Roman city of Nîmes with drinking water. A unique place in a rural setting, shaded by huge plane and poplar trees, in striking contrast with the surrounding natural bushland. To complete the setting, we must tell you about the dream-like stroll that you can indulge in in the shade and coolness of the pool's coping stones or by the old wheat mill... just to the antechamber of the first Duchy of France, the remarkable medieval town of Uzès. Built in this bucolic setting in the 16th century on more than ten hectares, this residence, flanked by two overhanging turrets, now offers approx. 300m² of living space with remarkable features such as a cross vaulted living room, French ceilings, wooden parquetry and period fireplaces. Not forgetting a non-adjoining outbuilding of approx. 200 m², in need of renovation, and a dovecote overlooking a second pool, four hundred years old and ISMH listed. This property emanates the sensation, the feeling, the conviction that the French art of living is still a reality that crosses borders. It has been part of the heritage of the same family for almost one hundred and fifty years and the acquisition of such an architectural work can only be governed by emotion! ref 2388

Castle Saint-Just-Saint-Rambert (42)

The John Taylor Lyon agency is pleased to present this chateau, built in the 14th century, transformed in the 19th century by an Italian owner who wanted to give it the Loire chateau style. It then became a sanatorium, then the property of an English lady wishing to open a Bed and Breakfast. The estate had fallen into disrepair, but over the past 6 years, its current owners have brought it back to life. The architecture is unique for the region, with slate roofs maintained and tended each year, and whitewashed facades. The high windows on the facades are fitted with double-glazed, burglar-proof glass and adorned with majestic hangings. The chateau and its outbuildings meet the highest standards for events, weddings, seminars, etc. Previously unheated, the owners have installed underfloor central heating with a pellet-fired boiler. The entire estate is connected to mains drainage. The building comprises a 3-storey château with elegant reception rooms and lounges on the first floor, plus a fully equipped kitchen; the upper floors are devoted to sleeping quarters, with 13 en-suite bedrooms. The 4-storey, classically-styled mansion houses bedrooms and dormitories with different shower rooms. In all, the estate can accommodate 60 guests. The ballroom, with its delicate frescoes on ceilings and walls, imitation parquet flooring, drapes, sparkling crystal chandeliers, sumptuous Venetian mirrors and vases borrowed from the Medici style, will leave no one indifferent. Access for the disabled has been created at the rear of the building. This room can accommodate over 200 guests. The orangery features an open-plan kitchen opening onto a large living room. Upstairs are 2 bedrooms and a bathroom. Finally, a former pigeon house is being renovated with electricity and water connections. The 2-hectare park has also been redeveloped, with new trees planted for greenery and beautiful fountains and wrought-iron arbors for ambiance. A three-hundred-year-old weeping beech enthroned in the middle of the park is classified as a remarkable tree. The fountains are fed by natural springs. The estate is surrounded by a stone wall. The estate also includes a riding arena and a huge tarmac parking lot. Let yourself be seduced by the refinement of the premises and be carried away in a project combining the private with the professional, I am at your disposal to continue the work accomplished: Claire Barralon, John Taylor LYON agency, on 07 60 13 70 00, [email protected], real estate agent registered with the RSC of LYON under number 904 488 533.

Castle Lectoure (32)

Constructed in the 15th century and redesigned in the 17th this sumptuous château was designed in the style of the Italian Renaissance. In the North of the Gers it is located a short drive away from the popular market towns of Lectoure, Fleurance and St Clar. Situated in a quiet location, down a tranquil country lane, and far from the main road, the property offers over 7 hectares of glorious parkland and an abundance of trees. The property is entirely private being both hedged and gated, with a small stream bordering the land at the bottom. The main body of the château comprises eight bedrooms, and a vast main reception/dining-room, and first floor library/reception-room. With a separate guest house. The flamboyant Italian-style first floor “loggia” – with its covered terrace and arcades overlooking the tranquil gardens is an absolute delight. With a paved pool area, 2 dovecotes, and a vast 170m2 hangar the garden is full of interest with a vast array of mature trees, roses and bushes and an orchard. This property provides a peaceful sanctuary from the world, in a location that is unique, being utterly private, and yet in the located heart of one of the most sought-after areas of SW France. Let’s look in more detail … The local area, the parkland, gardens, and outbuildings The drive by car to the property is as pleasant one. With easy access to the local market towns of Lectoure and Fleurance the property is tranquil yet easily accessible. The TGV line to Paris in Agen is under an hour away, and Toulouse international airport, just over an hour. As we leave the market towns behind, the countryside is rich and peaceful, with small country lanes cutting through emerald, green fields, where in the summer crops of sunflowers or wheat grow in an area fondly known as French Tuscany. If Gascony is the Tuscany of France, then this property offers all the joys of Renaissance Italy. Designed in pure Italian style, the property was built by a rich noble family in the 15th century. From the outside very little can be seen, as a thick natural hedge encircles the perimeter of the land. The entrance to the property is enclosed by two fine wrought-iron gates, both of which are in perfect keeping with the château and marking the entrance in style. The château is located at the end of a quiet lane that opens out onto fields, so one is not troubled by any passing traffic. The occasional hare or deer, perhaps. We enter from the side gate to the main entrance, with a view of a splendid pigeonnier or dovecote to our right. The pool nestles beside the first of the two dovecotes and is sheltered by rose-covered walls. There is a water-well with a decorative wrought iron frame on the top. Always ideal to have a source of water on the land, to keep the lovely gardens fresh and green; not forgetting the small river that runs along the bottom field. There are over seven hectares of land in total, ensuring utmost tranquility for anyone residing here. Of those seven hectares the land around the gardens, and the guest house, comprises an orchard (to the front of the guest house) neatly mown lawns, and mature trees. There is an ornamental row of topiary, and a small river at the bottom of the land. The gardens feel rich and bucolic. In an area known for its scorching hot summers, there is a freshness to the parkland, shaded by ancient boughs of the trees. The ambience here is one of lush greenery. As we turn around the chateau to the rear gardens, we catch our first glimpse of the fantastic loggia, a covered terrace with arches running the full length of the property which is purely Italian Renaissance in style; joyous and romantic with its impressive corner pavillions. The main master bedroom opens onto the loggia, offering a morning view over the gardens; a sure promise that one’s day will begin on a note of beauty and tranquility. The Chateau has a joie de vivre which one might not expect from a Medieval building. It is warm and welcoming from the outside with its mellow golden walls catching the last of the autumn sunshine. Let’s open the grand entrance door, and step inside… The main entrance to the chateau is paved in stone with a wooden staircase to the first floor. As one would expect the entrance is formal and is divided into two distinct sections with the original wooden front door at the entrance, and at the end of the hallway a second door, with the intelligent addition of a glass door that allows the light to flood into the hallway, in a way which is not traditionally medieval but certainly delightful for modern living, where one’s instinct is to let the sunshine in, and to keep the warmth inside. From the central hallway, we take a brief look at a large room which has not been restored for any other purpose than storage, but with a large opening at the far end, in a room which is interesting in so far as it is of similar size to the main reception room, and certainly offers possibilities for further development of the property’s habitable area, planning permissions permitting. The main reception/dining-room is a fantastic space for entertainment. With its quirky vaults the room is divided into two distinct sections. The first part of the room (from the central hallway) has a lovely stone fireplace where the family gather. The perfect place for a winter or Christmas gathering. The second part of the room is used as a dining-area. There are large windows to the gardens in both the reception and dining areas. At the far end of the room, a doorway leads into a tower area, with a pleasantly Medieval feel to it, where there is a downstairs cloakroom and lavatory. The kitchen sits a little way apart from the dining-room, for ease, and has recently been completely refurbished. This is a warm and inviting room, with ample space for a breakfast table, and tasteful modern units. From the kitchen a doorway opens onto the loggia. This utterly charming terrace offers views onto the gardens from between the arches and is a delightful place to sit in the shade on a scorching hot summer’s day. Upstairs There are two wings to the first floor, set from a central staircase. Two of the bathrooms are built into the quirky corner pavilion towers. The master bedroom and the study both open onto the charming loggia. From the master bedroom you can steal a view of the morning from between the arcades of the first-floor loggia, take coffee outside on a warm private terrace area, or fall back to sleep watching the light muslin curtains flutter between the arches. This is a room in which the imagination can take flight! Also on the first floor, there is a deliciously private library, which is provides a tranquil retreat from the downstairs reception-rooms. With its rows of bookshelves, and cinema area, this is a lovely private room, where the owners can escape when the house is full of guests. One of the upstairs bedrooms is currently used as a private study but could also be used as an extra bedroom. With a total of eight bedrooms and four bathrooms on the two upstairs wings of the house, we note that each room is blessed with high volumes, tall windows, far-reaching views and many period features which have been preserved. The current owners have carried out an extensive scheme of works since they first moved in, and a vast majority of all the rooms have been recently redecorated or refurbished. The kitchen is brand new. The oil fuel boiler has just been replaced and we have noted the clever installation of the thick glass doors on the lower level that ensure the spacious ground-floor living area is snug throughout the winter months. This property is now welcoming throughout all four seasons and is in an excellent state of repair. The gardens are also immaculate and must work has been carried out to regain parts of the plot that had become overgrown. The Guest House With two bedrooms, a central reception room/kitchen and bathroom, the guest house is set well apart from the house, by the orchard, and is a decided advantage to this property either for lettings or for family and friends. Safe & Secure The property is equipped with an alarm linked to a video surveillance system which detects all movement in the property.

Castle Saumur (49)

Ref.4213: Charming chateau for sale close to Saumur. This beautiful property, whose origins date back to the 15th century, is located in the Loire Valley, famous for its wine production, its cellars dug into the tufa rock, its history and its châteaux. The region has seen a fortunate succession of lordly families whose history has contributed to the heritage of Anjou. Having put down roots in this culturally rich and dynamic environment, the town nevertheless enjoys a certain tranquillity, being isolated from the outside world by a natural green setting. The main shops are just a 3-minute drive away, in the neighbouring village. The town of Saumur, with its famous cavalry school, is 10 minutes away, offering all the shops, services and tourist activities you could wish for. Surrounded by a moat, the château stands elegantly back from an imposing main courtyard, which is accessed via a majestic wrought iron gate from a long driveway lined with old trees. Built of tufa stone with slate roofs on an irregular three-storey plan, this complex comprises a main building framed by two pavilions flanked by corbelled turrets, extended to the west by a two-storey pleasure building and to the east by a three-storey pavilion. The latter was added in the second half of the 19th century. In the centre, in front of the main building, a remarkable tufa porch topped by a terrace surrounded by magnificent balusters forms the main entrance to the château. The neo-Gothic style, characterised by the exuberance of Renaissance splendour, was used extensively to decorate the building. The façades, doors, windows, pediments, pinnacles, dormer windows and turrets are adorned with finials, bracketed and drip lintels, clerestory friezes, crenellations, chimeras, coats of arms, etc... The interior style is also largely inspired by the somewhat fanciful architectural codes used in the first half of the 19th century. Ground floor: passing through the porch, one reaches the entrance from where an L-shaped gallery leads from the older main part of the château on one side to the more recent 19th century pavilion on the other. Opposite the entrance is a study, followed on its right by a series of rooms in a row, a dining room, a large recent kitchen with direct access to the courtyard of honour, a scullery, a boiler room and a storeroom, while following the gallery on its left one reaches a spacious, more classical lounge before arriving in the 19th century pavilion. This central section features beautiful polychrome cement tile, parquet and marble floors, panelled picture rails, beautifully crafted stained glass windows and wooden shutters, monumental tufa stone fireplaces, a marble fireplace and admirable painted and illuminated ceilings. The 19th-century pavilion houses a vast VIP lounge with a parquet floor, a wooden fireplace carved with sophisticated ornamentation, impressive stained glass windows and a ceiling with closoirs. Finally, a gallery connects the 19th-century pavilion to the main gallery via an attractive, light-filled glass roof overlooking the kitchen garden to the south. The upper floors are accessed from the south end of the gallery via a beautiful spiral staircase with impressive wooden balusters, rising to the roof and topped by an imposing cupola. On the first floor: a landing leads to a gallery with five north-facing bedrooms on either side, each with its own bathroom, dressing room and storage space. There are parquet floors, marble fireplaces, wooden shutters, exposed beams and ornate ceilings. A future master suite is being created at the west end of the château. A delightful small wooden baluster stairway, with Gothic-inspired ogival archway decoration, leads to the upper floor. On the second floor, corridors lead to four bedrooms, two bathrooms and several storage rooms. The property has several outbuildings as follows: A group of buildings comprising : - A chapel, with its porch covered by a slate canopy resting on wooden balusters and its rib-vaulted ceiling, - A shed used as a workshop, - A barn/garage with attic (currently being converted), - A gîte comprising: Ground floor: entrance hall, fitted kitchen with tufa fireplace and wood-burning stove, sitting room. 1st floor: 3 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms (electric hot water tank), - A former barn used as a shed and pool equipment room, - A former stable converted into a SPA area (Jacuzzi, sauna), A salt water swimming pool (10x5m), heated by a heat pump, installed in 2023, A gardener's house used as a shed and pool house, A garage, A water tower, A cellar. Vast grounds of approx. 16,06 acres comprising : A beautiful English-style park with alternating courtyards, driveways and gardens within the château grounds. The area is bordered by a moat (fed by the Suzon river), and is adorned with beautiful old trees (Lebanese cedar, ginkgo biloba, lime trees, oaks, plane trees, pines, vines, etc.). Castle Fay-aux-Loges (45)

A restored 17th-century chateau and outhouses in four hectares of grounds, nestled in a village in France’s Centre Val-de-Loire region. The chateau was built in the 17th century. It is surrounded by woods and meadows. The feudal lords who lived here, one after the other, ran the place like a farm. The four-hectare property lies in the town centre. You reach it via a large iron gate. A long tree-lined driveway then leads up to the chateau. The grounds are entirely enclosed with an outer wall punctuated with several doorways. The town is very old. It was traditionally a place of stonecutters. The local quarries were used up to the early 20th century. The buildings on the property are made of Fay stone, which is light grey, are they are crowned with slate roofs. Their elevations are rendered. The property is organised around a range of buildings with different purposes. On the south side, there is the large main dwelling. Its windows are evenly spaced out in line with each other. A long wing adjoins it. This wing is now a guesthouse. There is also a dovecote and outbuildings. The structures are arranged around a gravel courtyard and a garden. On the north side, a vast area of tree-dotted parkland extends behind the chateau.
