    House Stanford (United States)

746 Santa Ynez Street is one of the most historically significant private residences in Stanford's San Juan Hill neighborhood — and one of the least known, sitting below street level behind a dense screen of mature trees, invisible to passersby on the street above. The house was designed in 1917 by Charles K. Sumner of San Francisco, the architect of record, whose original drawings are dated August 29, 1917, in a Mediterranean style with French influences. (The property appears in Stanford's Birge Clark architectural collection due to a 1941 kitchen remodel by Malcolm Clark, Birge's son; the confusion is understandable but the authorship is Sumner's.) It was commissioned by Albert Conser Whitaker, a Stanford professor of economics, who ran out of funds before completion. Herbert and Lou Henry Hoover purchased the unfinished house and upgraded it substantially while their own house on the crown of San Juan Hill was under construction. It was Lou Henry Hoover who lived in and completed this house while her husband served in Washington under Woodrow Wilson and attended the Versailles Peace Conference. Original cedar shelves in the basement still bear the Hoovers' name. The subsequent owners read like a roster of Stanford's 20th-century intellectual core: Ephraim Douglass Adams, the history professor who helped Hoover establish what became the Hoover Institution; Leonas Lancelot Burlingame, the botanist whose General Biology textbook shaped a generation of students; and Theodore W. Anderson, professor emeritus of statistics and economics, fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, and member of the National Academy of Sciences. The house offers 3,319 square feet across two main floors, plus a fully finished lower level of 614 square feet with a bedroom and full bath — six bedrooms and three and a half baths in total — on 1.15 acres. The curved driveway passes the full width of the house, and the rear garden is an oasis, including a pool, two large decks, a stunning California live oak, redwoods, liquidambar, Monterey pines, and mature fruit trees. The interior retains much of its original period details and hardware. Some houses have addresses. This one has a history. Stanford-eligible buyers only.

    House Menlo Park (United States)

2161 Valparaiso Avenue is a custom-crafted green smart home in the heart of University Heights — West Menlo Park's most sought-after enclave — where soaring architecture, designer finishes, and seamless indoor-outdoor living converge in a way that is genuinely rare at any price. The schools, first. Las Lomitas Elementary ranks in the top 1% of all 9,500+ California public schools, with 87% of students proficient in math and reading — more than double the state average. La Entrada Middle School carries that standard through 8th grade. This is the school path families move to Menlo Park for, and this home sits squarely within it. The architecture. Step inside and the space announces itself immediately. Double-height ceilings rise above the great room, bathed in natural light from skylights overhead, while a dramatic floor-to-ceiling stacked stone fireplace anchors the room. Walls of glass slide open on both sides, dissolving the line between interior and exterior — drawing the eye out to a private deck and a serene bamboo garden that feels worlds away from Silicon Valley's pace. A sculptural floating staircase — open-tread wood treads, steel cable railings, warm walnut handrail — ascends through the double-height volume like a piece of art that also happens to take you upstairs. The kitchen. A professional Viking range with six burners and dual ovens, Sub-Zero refrigerator, integrated EuroCave wine cooler, quartz waterfall island, mosaic tile backsplash, and warm walnut cabinetry. This is a kitchen serious cooks and effortless entertainers will both claim as their own. The primary suite. Serene and private, with sliding glass doors opening directly to the garden. Dual vessel sinks, sage green subway tile, an oversized glass-enclosed shower, a skylight, and a private outdoor courtyard — a spa-caliber retreat that makes the morning ritual feel like a small luxury every day. The flex space. Upstairs, a skylit lounge with custom built-in walnut shelving and a private balcony is the ideal home office, creative studio, or reading room above the treetops — purpose-built for the way people work today. The green and smart home design. Built from the ground up with sustainability at its core: Control4 whole-home automation (audio, video, lighting, security, climate control), energy-efficient systems throughout, and bamboo floors chosen for their beauty and environmental credentials. This is not a retrofit — it's a home where green living and thoughtful design were the brief from day one. The setting. University Heights is the kind of neighborhood where people arrive and simply never leave. Walkable, quiet, and held together by a genuine sense of community. Stanford University, Sand Hill Road's venture capital corridor, Meta's headquarters, and the Sharon Heights shopping center are all within minutes. Highway 280 access makes the commute to San Francisco or San Jose straightforward. Rarely does a home this carefully conceived come to market in a neighborhood this deeply loved.

House with pool and garden Portola Valley (United States)

With five bedrooms, four bathrooms, this home has space and options. The 1.14± acre gated property enjoys level lawn, pool and mature privacy trees. The home is welcoming. They say the kitchen is the heart of the home and this space embodies that. Amenities include quality appliances and extras: six-burner Wolf range, two ovens, microwave and warming drawers, two dishwashers – one for dishes, one for pots and pans. Exceptional storage with pull-out shelving, custom corner cabinets and an appliance lift. The island provides workspace and seating. An adjacent family room has light, a fireplace, and access to the large deck. French doors open to incorporate the formal dining/living rooms into this space. Beamed ceilings, a fireplace, hardwood floors, a wall of windows and doors allow you to access the deck, to enjoy the view and host large gatherings. With a private entry a flexible, bookshelf-lined space could be an office, au pair or guest suite. There are two primary suites: three additional bedrooms plus an office. The upper-level has the second primary and includes a bonus room for an office/nursery/or workout space. There is a bedroom off the family room (ideal for guests). Great Portola Valley location: close to local shopping, Alpine Hills Swim & Tennis club, The Alpine Inn, excellent Portola Valley schools, and just four minutes to Highway 280.
