It has an area of 171.32 km2 and about 4728 inhabitants (2006), being one of the smallest in the district. It is formed by four parishes: Cuba, Faro do Alentejo, Vila Alva, Vila Ruiva and the place of Albergaria dos Fusos, which belongs to the latter parish. It borders, to the north, with the municipalities of Évora, Viana and Portel; to the east, with the municipality of Vidigueira; to the south, with the municipality of Beja and, to the west, with the municipalities of Ferreira do Alentejo and Alvito. Created by D. Maria's charter of December 18, 1782, the municipality of Cuba then encompassed the parishes of Pedrogão, Marmelar, Selmes and part of S. Matias. At this time the parishes of Vila Alva, Vila Ruiva, Faro do Alentejo and Albergaria dos Fusos were still independent municipalities, a situation that remained until November 6, 1839, when these municipalities were extinguished.
