House Saint-Gengoux-le-National (71)
A charming pair of traditional houses with a gallery and vegetable patches in a quaint village nestled in southern Burgundy. The road that the houses are on alludes to the winegrowers who were still giving the village its wine-based renown only a few decades ago. Indeed, the traditional architecture here reflects the local winemaking industry that the houses were built around: the liveable floor is raised and lies behind a gallery with stone steps and timber pillars, leaving space for excellent wine cellars on the garden level below. The walls are made of limestone. The dwellings are crowned with a gable roof of small, flat tiles. All the structural works (roofing, aluminium frames, mini water-treatment system, etc.) have been entirely reviewed over the past three years in accordance with guidelines from France’s public architects in built heritage. And many of the finishing works have already been completed (electrics, plumbing, plastering, heating via reversible air conditioning, bathroom fittings, etc.). The two dwellings were originally separate homes, each with their own gallery. But today they connect to each other, though they could still be used separately, with combined networks fitted.
