Castle Chateauroux (36)
A spectacular medieval chateau, restored with hotel-standard renovations, nestled in France’s beautiful Berry province. The chateau’s emblematic shape, with its tall towers and vast roofs, seems to rise up out of the landscape. The edifice was built in the 15th century. It originally had 14 towers and a keep, which made it one of the main strongholds in the region. During the French Wars of Religion, it became the property of Protestant families. Upon the orders of Cardinal Richelieu, the chateau was partly dismantled to weaken this Huguenot stronghold. Today, seven towers remain. The chateau was extensively restored in 1850 based on proposals from the famous French architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc. Over the past thirty years, it has been renovated fully and masterfully. Several of its towers and even the keep have kept their original roof frames, which is truly remarkable given the changes made to the edifice over the centuries. All the elevations are made of rubble stone with pointing. The keep’s facade and the crenellations along the top of the gatehouse’s towers are made of ashlar. The keep, the main section and four of the seven towers are crowned with tall, steep slate roofs. The other towers have flat roofs, hidden behind crenellations. A series of outbuildings are grouped together and set back from the main edifice. They are arranged around several courtyards. The grounds slope down to a river. A swimming pool has been built on a grassy terrace. And a tennis court lies discreetly behind an outbuilding. From the property’s commanding position, you can admire far-reaching views of the surrounding landscape.

At the bottom of the garden there is a garage that you enter from another road.

Erected in 1925 for the composer Pierre Onfroy de Bréville by Charles Abella, who had won second prize at the Prix de Rome in 1907, the building’s façade features faux stone on the first floor, followed by red brick, decorated with a stringcourse with geometrical patterns between the second and third floors as well as details in homage to its commissioner. Above the entrance, a window is safeguarded by a wrought-iron grill depicting an antique lyre, while two sets of arched glass double doors on the first floor are topped with musical allegories: a cicada musician 'born' on a pan flute and another on an aulos – the double flute used by the ancient Greeks. In addition, a number of tall windows and doors cadence its exteriors, while most of its architectural details have been conserved, such as its mullioned windows, majestic stone staircase, parquet floors, crown moulding and fireplaces. Constructed in 1247 by Montassin de Goalard, Abbot of Condom, the chateau, once a Gascon fortress, has, over the years, been progressively transformed, embellished and opened outwards in the direction of the village, whereas, in 1567, Blaise de Monluc made several improvements before Monsignor de Milon carried out significant modifications in a more classical style in the early 18th century.

A vast, 17th century, stately residence adjoining a fuedal castle on the outskirts of Uzès. This vast, comfortable 17th century mansion house was built on the site of the old tower belonging to Uzès’ Duke of Crussol. Facing the current village castle, its site is reminiscent of the wonderful homes of the numerous lords surrounding the Duchy of Uzès. Topped with a dovecote, visible from afar and bearing witness to the fact that its co-owners were lords, this residence is set out around a little courtyard, bordered by an old road leading inside the ramparts of the fortress, now transformed into a little Mediterranean garden amidst the surrounding towers and buildings. The two, south and north-facing buildings are connected by two covered balcony corridors on the first and second levels laid out around the courtyard. The wide, symmetrical, south facade, overlooking the pedestrian square, has two completely different facings. The ground floor is composed of simply hewn limestone blocks, whilst the first and second levels are constituted from dressed molasse (a type of sandstone), embellished here and there with limestone, particularly for the cornice enhancing the four large windows on the first level, the lintels of which outline the arches. The small-paned, casement windows fitted with double folding shutters on the first or noble floor elegantly contrast with the simplicity of the openings on the ground floor, on either side of the impressive, rusticated masonry entrance door. The eaves protrude over small windows aligned with those on the first level. The facades on the courtyard side are very similar in appearance, except that the entire ground floor is composed of arcades, just like the Place-aux-Herbes in Uzès, and that the north building features two mullioned windows on its south and west sides. All the roofs are covered with old Roman tiles.
