A former abbatial dwelling, listed as a regional Historical Monument, with a walled garden and canal, in a historical Touraine village, near Loches. In the middle of the village, the edifice, listed as a regional Historical Monument and in all likelihood dating back to the 14th century, was once the residence for a Benedictine abbey, whose 18th-century buildings still stand directly opposite. Castle Chatillon-en-bazois (58)
A 14th century fortified house, outbuildings and 17 hectare estate between Châtillon-en-Bazois and Château-Chinon in the Nivernais region, on the border of the Morvan natural park. Covering an area of around 17 hectares, the estate lies at an altitude of 300 metres and enjoys a continental climate. Mainly made up of meadows with fertile soils, it includes four ponds to the south of the stronghold house, on an east-west axis that follows the slight slope of the plot. To the north, three imposing barns with rendered rubble stone façades and traditional flat tile, mechanical tile or slate roofs mark the entrance to the property. The dwelling consists of two buildings, set at right angles to each other and backed by a square master tower, mentioned as early as 1443. The latter has retained its harquebusiers in its upper section, characteristic of its first defensive use. Its four-sloped roof is made of Burgundy tiles, as are the roofs of the dwelling, and topped with two finials, while two dormer windows light up the attic of the dwelling. Access to the gravelled inner courtyard, located to the east of the stronghold house, is via a châtelet, whose porch is supported by two semi-circular arches. Adjacent to this, a more recent house now houses the boiler room and a workshop. A second tower, to the south of the main building, contains a stone spiral staircase. Between the two towers, the east and west façades of the two-storey attic dwelling featuring mainly straight windows and an oculus, are plain and rendered throughout except for the ashlar surrounds. A contemporary garden has also been laid out by the current occupants, adding to the spirit of the place. The estate has retained its medieval appearance and archival research has identified the presence of a former seigneury as early as the first half of the 14th century.

In Luso, in the Bairrada region, a former 19th-century post office converted into a house of around 240 m². The post no longer passes through here. But something of that original purpose remains within the walls: the idea that a building can be the fixed point around which life is organised. Casa dos Correios has stood on Luso’s main thoroughfare since the 19th century, opposite the Parish Council and the Tourist Office. A former 18th-century chapel, listed as a Historical Monument & in need of a full renovation, in the middle of the French Vexin Regional Natural Park. Rebuilt in the 18th century by Moufle de La Tuilerie and then remodelled in the first half of the 19th century, the chateau of Hanneucourt then formed a holiday home featuring a main dwelling, an orangery, a dovecote, stables, staff quarters and a private chapel. Topped with a slate and zinc hipped roof, its main façade features a triangular pediment as well as a quadrilobate rose window, whereas a roof lantern with a bell crowns the roof ridge, a subtle reminder of the building’s original purpose. Within close proximity, the estate’s former dovecote contributes to this one-of-a-kind composition, while the chapel’s interior exudes a contemplative ambiance, quite intact despite the passing of time and the years spent abandoned. Featuring a black and white chequered tile floor, wood panelling around the choir, painted décor and light filtering through its stained glass windows, creating a quiet, meditative space, the chapel’s interior also boasts several statues, paintings and lecterns, which act like silent guardians watching over the nave. In addition, its interior dimensions, relatively large for an edifice of this size, procure a feeling of unexpected volume, while the chapel is flooded in light, which highlights its burnished walls and original wood panelling depending on the time of day. Lastly, it should be noted that the chapel’s immediate outskirts will need to be reimagined, but provide the opportunity and necessary space to create a monastic-inspired garden or a more contemporary landscaped courtyard.

The first, of elongated plan, is covered by a two-pitch slate roof. The second, built in the same materials, rises over two levels with converted upper space and is pierced by rooflights. The arrangement is organised around a tarmacked central area accessible from the entrance. To the rear, the grounds — partly adjoining those of the Château des Salles — extend as a broad lawn punctuated by specimen trees and copses. Tall-standard tree lines border the whole, with planted boundaries providing further structure. Timber and stone fencing encloses certain sections.
